holy place. Another inference is that the Explanation: This student did not complete the
narrator assignment but earned points for having their
writing in a paragraph format. Additionally, they
successfully make an inference that the narrator is a
“caring person”. However, they do not demonstrate
the ability to prove this claim by citing evidence
from the text. While there is an attempt because the
student says, “I say that because it said there’s more
to be said for pilgramages than just seeing a holy
place”, this is not a direct quote from the text and it
is not cited with quotation marks or a page number.
Additionally, this student only makes one attempt to
make an inference and does not correctly cite any
evidence in support of any claims that they make on
this assignment. Last but not least, there are several
grammar and spelling errors.

Explanation: Student B only earns a point for
making an attempt at making an inference about the
narrator, Geoffrey. Student B writes, “He is very
caring and warming”. However, this is not written
in a complete sentence. Further, there is only one
sentence so this cannot count as a paragraph and
there is no second inference or evidence to support
either claim. Therefore, their score is a ⅕ or 20%. In
reflecting on this student’s performance during the
beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, it appears
that they were struggling to integrate themselves
into a whole classroom environment since they
previously experienced English class in a self-
contained learning environment. Therefore, it took
some time to learn and implement the strategies
that would best support this student to meeting
their greatest learning potential and ultimately,
demonstrating dramatic academic growth.

•  A second inference of the story is first month of school. This student demonstrates
that he is a popular or well known ability to make a claim and support it with evidence
from the text. For example Student C writes, “One

or something. (PG. 4) “My canterbury pilgrimage

Though I see that this student is approaching
mastery of the objective, there are several grammar
errors as well as the fact that the presentation of the
writing is choppy in general. Though this student
got a good grade on the assignment, they
demonstrate that there is much to be desired with
regard to their overall written performance.
