GRAMMAR. Indirect speech: imperatives

Look at these examples of direct and indirect speech.

Direct speech: Peter said, “Be careful if you go out during the storm.”
Indirect speech: Peter said to be careful if you go out during the storm.

They said, “Read the weather report.”  They said to read the weather report.
She says, “Don’t go out without a full tank of gas.”  She says not to go out without
a full tank of gas.

Complete these grammar rules with direct speech or indirect speech.
1. Use quotation marks in direct speech .
2. In indirect speech , the verb in an imperative becomes an infinitive.
3. Use not + an infinitive in negative statements in indirect speech .

Look at these other examples of direct and indirect speech.

She told me, “Please call me when you get home.”  She asked me to call her when I get home.
