Results, but presentations on hold

Ballan Cricket Club
By Chris Thom

Ballan’s 1st XI team have taken out the 2019/20 BCA

2nd Grade Premiership, finishing on top of the ladder
after defeating Wendouree on the Qualifying Final last
weekend.
The following is an excerpt from the BCA with the
reasoning behind the awarding of the Premierships due to
COVID-19.
“Following on from the decision to cancel all cricket matches this
weekend and beyond, the Board and PC of the Ballarat Cricket
Association have declared that the following rules apply relating
to determination of winners for the 2019/20 season.
Excerpts from Senior Rules 28 and 29 – ‘Should no decision be
reached or a tie result, the winner shall be deemed to be the team
highest ranked after the Qualifying Finals’.
Qualifying finals are references to matches directly preceding
Semi, Preliminary and/or Grand Finals.
All Senior and Junior matches scheduled for March 20, 21 &
22 will be treated the same as they would have been, for example
washed out, with the highest ranked teams deemed winners. With
this determination, the Clubs in each Grade will be awarded the
season 2019/20 Premierships.”

All-rounders top of their game

By Caitlin Bewley
(3rd Yr Swinburne Uni)

Bacchus Marsh born and bred cricketers have clean-bowled the

Central Highlands Cricket Awards.
Cousins Sam (13) and Daniel (17) Lalor of the Bacchus Marsh
Cricket Club (BMCC) were named U/14 and U/18 Players of the
Series for the 2019/2020 season.
The awards night acknowledged the many outstanding
cricketing achievements from across the Central Highlands
region throughout the season.
“They’re both very similar players,” BMCC Junior Co-ordinator
Stephen Lalor told the Moorabool News. “They can both bat and
bowl and have a left-handed, off spin [bowling style].”
The BMCC Junior Co-ordinator told the Moorabool News that
the Lalor boys, who started their cricket careers back in the Milo
Cricket days, have been at BMCC from the start.
“Daniel has worked his way up through the ranks. He’s an
identified cricket player and has represented the state through
many age groups.
“He played in the U/17 Championships last year and
represented in Vic Country, which is the pathway to Victorian
Premier Cricket, and, ultimately, international cricket.” Mr
Lalor said.
“Sam captained the team for Central Highlands this year, [U/14
Player of the Series] would be his most significant individual
achievement to date.
“He was selected in the Renegade’s team, being one of 12 or
13 people who represent country regions in a youth premier
league program,” Mr Lalor said.
When asked if the two left-handed, off spinning bowlers were
expecting the award, Mr Lalor told the Moorabool News that it
wasn’t a huge surprise because “they’re both potential match
Daniel Lalor winners on game days.” Sam Lalor

Court implements
new procedures
By Caitlin Bewley

The usually busy Friday at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s court housed bare seats on
March 27, with the adjourning of multiple cases to mid 2020.
Magistrate Letizia Torres heard numerous intervention orders, cases via video link
and two applications to be relicensed, with most hearings listed to be adjourned until
June 15.
Court staff explained all cases listed for June 15 may not be heard on that date as it is
simply a time for the court to reassign future hearing dates where needed.
Security guards assured the Moorabool News the Bacchus Marsh court will continue
to run, but new protocols will be put into place.
Future hearings will see court goers attend court with their legal representation and
be heard via video link with a Magistrate based in the Ballarat Magistrate’s court.

Community Announcement
As of Monday, March 30, the front door of my electorate office will be closed.
This was a hard decision to make, but in the interests of the safety of my staff and the
broader community we had no other choice.
This is a tough time for many in our community, and I want to assure you all that my
office will be here to help throughout it all.
While the front door may be closed, we will still be available to all in the community
via phone at 03 5338 8123 or email at Catherine.king.mp@aph.gov.au.
While coronavirus is at the forefront of our thoughts, I want to assure you that I remain focused on what
matters to the Bacchus Marsh community, in particular the proposals regarding the storage of contaminated
waste from the Westgate Tunnel Project. While this is primarily a state matter, after briefings from the
State Government, Transurban and Moorabool Shire Council, as well as discussions with community
campaigners, it has become clear to me that the contaminated soil should not come to Bacchus Marsh.
Community engagement and consultation throughout this process has been shockingly lacking. The truck
movements proposed alone are, I believe, frankly unworkable.
Over recent weeks I have reached out to the organiser of the community campaign and provided some
advice. I will continue to engage with community organisers on this important issue.
When it comes to the coronavirus emergency, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need assistance
in any way.
Important sources of information at this time are:
• If you are concerned about your health, call your GP or the national Coronavirus Health Information
Hotline on 1800 020 080 for advice. The line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
• If you are an older resident of our community, you can also call the Older Persons Advocacy Network
on 1800 237 981 from 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday to discuss your concerns about COVID-19,
• If you have online access, up to date information and advice is available at the Commonwealth
Department of Health (www.health.gov.au) and the Victorian Department of Health (https://www.
dhhs.vic.gov.au/),
• Advice for businesses and individuals facing financial strain can be found at https://www.business.
gov.au/ or https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/,
• If you or someone you know is in need of mental health support, please call Lifeline on 131114 or
Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.
• As in every national emergency, ABC will be providing accurate and informative coverage.
Over the coming months remember to keep yourselves healthy. Eat well, keep active and keep in touch
by phone or social media with your family, friends and loved ones.
Most importantly, stay home. If you don’t have to leave the house, don’t leave the house.
I will be staying at home, and you should too.
Our nurses, doctors, paramedics and all medical staff will be working around the clock to keep our
community safe and save lives. By staying at home, we will be making their work easier.
Please don’t hesitate to contact my office with any questions, and I look forward to seeing all of you out
and about in the community as soon as this emergency is over.
