Course Category Professional core
Course Title Formwork design and enabling structures
Teaching Scheme and Credits L T Laboratory Credits
Weekly load hrs 3 0 2 2+0+1
Pre-requisites: Structural Analysis , Soil Mechanics theory and laboratory course

Course Objectives: To bring about a thorough exposure to shoring, scaffolding and formwork
procedures in construction practice by studying the materials, planning and design aspects and
erection procedures
1. To study the materials associated with formwork
2. To study the design aspects of formwork under various requirements.
3. To study the planning and erection aspects of form work
4. To study about a few special types of forms
5. To study the enabling structures and its importance.

1. Knowledge (i) To have basic knowledge of stress calculation and load carrying capacity
(ii) To have basic knowledge of structural analysis and stability of structure.
(iii) To be able to suggest suitable form work for construction site under
Consideration.

2. Skills (i) To identify the soil / plat form on which temporary support is to be supported
(ii) Apply fundamental knlowdge of structural stability while knowing strength of
material to be used , thus select suitable material for form work.
(iii) To plan and design temporary structure for construction work.

3. Attitude (i) To visualise 3D form of structure,

(ii) capability to understand stability needs and suggest solution
(iii) to understand and impart safety at every level of working in a construction
project.
PROGRAM OUTCOME:
Design a complex system or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as
economic, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability and project
schedule.
LAB SESSION: PROGRAM OUTCOME: Solve well-defined engineering problems related to
construction engineering.

Course Outcomes:

i. The student should be able to

 Identify the types of temporary facilities that will be needed during the progress of a
construction project, and categorize them by their function in supporting construction loads,
supporting partially completed works, providing personnel protection, supporting the
management and maintenance of production, or providing protection of the environment.
 Design shoring and falsework to support soils, construction equipment, partially supported
works, or other temporary loads during construction.
 Design formwork for simple concrete elements given design input variables, and describe
how to obtain these variables in the general case.
LAB COURSE OUTCOMES: The student should be able to
 Calculate earth pressures on excavation support structures for different support strategies.
 Calculate loads on buildings and other structures during construction.
