Instructions: (1) Answer all questions.

(2) Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, unless a different level
of accuracy is specified in the question.

[2010/A Level/II/Q4 modified]

1. The function f is defined as follows.
1
f:x→ for x ∈ ℝ , x ≠ − 1, x ≠ 1.
x2 −1
(i) Sketch the graph of y = f(x). [1]
(ii) If the domain of f is further restricted to x ≥ k, state with a reason the least value of k for which the
function f −1 exists. [2]

In the rest of the question, the domain of f is x ∈ ℝ , x ≠ − 1, x ≠ 1, as originally defined.

The function g is defined as follows.
1
g:x→ for x ∈ ℝ , x ≠ 2, x ≠ 3, x ≠ 4.
x−3
(x − 3)2
(iii) Show that fg(x) = . [2]
(4 − x)(x − 2)
(iv) Find the range of fg. [3]
(x − 3)
2
(v) State the set of values of c for which the equation = c has two real distinct roots. [1]
(4 − x)(x − 2)

[2008/A Level/I/Q7]
2. A new flower–bed is being designed for a large garden. The flower–bed
will occupy a rectangle x m by y m together with a semicircle of
diameter x m, as shown in the diagram. A low wall will be built around
the flower–bed. The time needed to build the wall will be 3 hours per
metre for the straight parts and 9 hours per metre for the semicircular
part. Given that a total time of 180 hours is taken to build the wall, find,
using differentiation, the values of x and y which give a flower-bed of
maximum area. [10]

3. The current I in an electric circuit at time t satisfies the differential equation 4 = 2 − 3I.
dt
Find I in terms of t, given that I = 2 when t = 0. [6]
State what happens to the current in this circuit for large values of t. [1]

5π/3 5π/3
4. (i) Find the exact value of ∫ 0 sin2 x dx. Hence find the exact value of ∫ 0 cos2 x dx. [6]

(ii) The region R is bounded by the curve y = x2 sin x, the line x = π and the part of the x-axis between
2
1
0 and π. Find
2
(a) the exact area of R, [5]
(b) the numerical value of the volume of revolution formed when R is rotated completely about the
x-axis, giving your answer correct to 3 decimal places. [2]

5. The line l has equation = 6 = 9 , and the plane p has equation x − 2y − 3z = 0.
−3
(i) Show that l is perpendicular to p. [2]
(ii) Find the coordinates of the point of intersection of l and p. [4]
(iii) Show that the point A with coordinates (−2, 23, 33) lies on l. Find the coordinates of the point B which
is the mirror image of A in p. [3]
(iv) Find the area of triangle OAB, where O is the origin, giving your answer to the nearest whole number. [3]

6. (i) Solve the equation x2 − 6x + 34 = 0. [2]
(ii) One root of the equation x4 + 4x3 + x2 + ax + b = 0 is x = − 2 + i.
(a) A student says that “One of the other roots must be – 2 – i.” Explain why this statement is not
entirely correct. [1]
(b) Given that a and b are real, find the values of a and b and the other roots. [5]

[2010/A Level/I/Q8 modified]

7. The complex numbers z1 and z2 are given by 1 + i√3 and − 1 − i respectively.
(i) On a single Argand diagram, sketch the loci

(b) arg (z − z2 ) = 4 π. [4]

(ii) Find where the locus | z − z1 | = 2 meets the positive real axis. [2]
