Goal
Students will be able to complete a first and second read of “What is Red?” and analyze the comparisons
made about red in the poem.

Objective
 Students will be able to listen to match descriptive language with images.
 Students will be able to listen to the poem being red and orally fill in the blanks.
 Students will be able to analyze the comparisons made between the color red and items in the poem.

Materials
 Picture match photocopies
 Written copy of the poem on chart paper
Introduction Ask students to list things that are red. Tell them that they will read a poem that
5 minutes compares the color red with different objects
Picture Match Before reading, students will match descriptive language with images to better visualize
the poem.
15 minutes
Tell students this will help them picture the poem when it’s read to them.
First and second Students take out poem or copy it from chart paper

First, the teacher reads the poem and leaves words out. Students fill in the blanks orally.
20 minutes Or teacher distributes poem with blanks left out. Teacher reads poem and students
write in blanks.

Second, students read the poem to a partner, switching line by line


Comparisons Ask students what it means to compare two things. To compare means to describe how
things are the same or similar.

Ask students what is being compared in the poem again and again. Red.

Tell students their last job will be to categorize the comparisons made in the poem.

Make the following chart on the board/in notebooks.
