Mesick Mushroom Festival
Continued from page 9

The young and the young-at-heart might be delighted by the

carnival (all three days) Friday evening’s bounce house, face
painting, treat walk, firetruck rides, craft table and bike give-
away, all in the high school parking lot. A parade and a marching
band performance are also scheduled for Saturday noon.
Need some catharsis after a stressful winter? Burn your wor-
ries away! The “Burning of the Shroom” is where you write
down your worries, stuff them in the ‘shroom and watch them
go up in smoke (Friday evening).
After all that activity, you might find yourself feeling a bit
peckish. Culinary offerings during the Mesick Mushroom Fes-
tival include a Michigan classic: pasties! The Masonic Lodge
is expected to sell pasties on Friday and Saturday mornings
starting at 11 a.m. Mesick United Methodist Church is offering
a “soup sampler” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Then later
that night, the Amvets are hosting a BBQ chicken dinner.
And who can forget the reason for the festival? You can pick up
a “mushroom hunting kit” at the Festival office (the M37 Com-
munity Field). The festival is hosting a contest for black morels,
starting on May 1 and concluding at noon on Saturday, May 9.
Mesick Market is sponsoring the mushroom contest. Mushroom
kits are $6.

Free fishing weekend
Michigan holds a couple “Free Fishing Weekends” throughout
the year.
The weekends are an opportunity to cast a line without first pur-
chasing a fishing license.
The summer’s free fishing weekend is scheduled for June 13 and
14.
“It’s a great opportunity for those that are interested in getting
into fishing or have been away from fishing for awhile to give it a
chance,” said Lt. Joe Molnar, conservation officer commander of
the Department of Natural Resource’s fourth district. “If you end
up liking it, buy a license and try more (fishing).”
Keep in mind that, while you don’t have to buy a license to fish
during the free fishing weekend, you do still have to follow all other
fishing regulations, such as catch limits.

Marion Fair plans fun
for day and night
Continued from page 28

Flying Star Rodeo is a part of the Mid States

Rodeo Association and International Pro Rodeo
Association. We provide a seven-event rodeo
including saddle bronc riding, bareback riding,
girls barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling,
calf roping, and bull riding.
“That (the rodeo) is new. We haven’t had some-
thing like that for years,” Bode said.
The week of fun and nightly entertainment
will conclude with a figure 8 demolition derby.
The event starts at 7:30 p.m. in the grandstand
and admission is $12 with children 5 and under
admitted free.
While the nightly entertainment is designed
to bring in the crowds during the evening, there
will be plenty of things to do during the day. This
includes carnival rides from Schmidt’s Amuse-
ments which starts on Wednesday, June 17 as
well as the livestock auction at 6 p.m. on Friday,
June 19.
Other attractions at the Marion Fair during
the week include vendors, VFW Bingo and the
traveling zoo from Muxlow Exotics. The zoo
contains 26 exhibits that house a wide variety
of reptile and amphibian species. While the zoo
was at the fair last year, Bode said this year there
will be three shows a day Wednesday-Saturday
that will be free. He also said admission to the
exhibit also will be free at this year’s fair.
Along the same lines, Bode said Clark the Jug-
gler also will be doing three free shows a day
beginning on Wednesday.
“You have seen the fair grow over the last few
years. It is getting back to what it used to be
thanks to the work of the fair board and the sup-
port of the community,” Bode said.

CADILLAC — Music lovers in Cadil-

number of free concerts available to
them all summer long at the Rotary
Performing Arts Pavilion.
World-class acts and regional favor-

Thursday from the end of June to the
end of August as part of the UpBeat
Cadillac series, which highlights blues,
jazz, R&B and rock ‘n roll musicians.
Organizer Tim Scully said they are
able to bring these acts to Northern
Michigan through various partner-
ships with sponsors and donations
from the public.
Although raising the money to bring
in the artists has been a perennial chal-
lenge (this year is no exception), Scully
said they’re going ahead with the se-
ries anyway; this year will be the 25th
season.
The lineup for this year’s UpBeat

such as experienced bluesmen, the

When the disc golfers come out

it’s a sure sign of spring

CADILLAC — Disc golfers are a hardy
bunch: if the weather is even halfway decent,
they’re out on the courses in abundance and
stay there until the snow flies again.
Disc golf is played like regular golf but
instead of clubs and small balls, they use
frisbee-like discs and large baskets.
The sport has gained in popularity over the
years, due in large part to how affordable it
is ... of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s also in-
credibly fun.
According to the Professional Disc Golf As-
sociation, disc golf evolved from the hippie
culture in Southern California about 40 years
ago. Though it’s now an established sport with
millions of players and national and interna-
tional tournaments, its laid-back roots live on.
This gives the game a casual, inclusive vibe.

Mountain biking trails in the
Cadillac area are rough...
CADILLAC — Mountain biking trails in the Cadillac
area have a quality that appeals to many involved in the
pastime — they’re rough.
“That’s what people say,” said Allen Garrow, store man-
ager for McLain Cycle and Fitness in Cadillac. “They’re
more like mountain biking used to be. Like you’re going
back to the origins of mountain biking.”
One of the premier trails in the area is the Cadillac
Pathway, which is chock full of climbs and “fun downhill
stuff,” Garrow said.
Also in Wexford County, the North Country National
Scenic Trail follows the general course of the Manistee
River near Buckley, Mesick and through the Huron-Man-
istee National Forest.
South of Cadillac, the White Pine Trail — sometimes
referred to as the Rails-to-Trails — is more of a straight
path, with much more subtle hill climbs and dips.
Another nearby pathway is the Big M, in Manistee
County, which offers a lush green canopy with many sce-
nic vistas.
Garrow said mountain biking is growing in popular-
ity, with people getting into both the traditional types
of bikes and alternative varieties, such as fat bikes and
e-bikes.
Fat bikes have wider tires that allow riders to traverse
terrain that a normal mountain bike can’t handle. E-
bikes have an electronic engine that matches the power
of the rider and allows them to travel faster.
For those who don’t have much experience, Garrow has
a few suggestions on what to bring on a ride Cadillac Pathway

Cadillac area full of golfing opportunities
We are spoiled here in Northern
Michigan when it comes to golf.
It is pretty much a guarantee that
there is a course somewhere that will
fits the bit when you want to play
nine or 18 holes. For us who live or
visit the Cadillac area, we are in one
of the best locations as there are sev-
eral courses in the area that cater to a
person’s skill.
Only in the game of golf can a
person be curing one minute and
celebrating the next. Yet as players
of the game of golf, we keep play-
ing through the good and bad shots.
Whatever it is about golf, once a per-
son is hooked they are hooked for a
lifetime.
As mentioned earlier, we are lucky
here in the Cadillac area when it
comes to opportunities for golfing.
