House votes again to repeal ‘Don’t Ask’

Time is the enemy, as momentum
builds to ditch gay ban
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com

The U.S. House on Wednesday approved by a

75-vote margin a measure that would repeal “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” as attention shifts once again to the
Senate to see if the chamber will act to lift the mili-
tary’s gay ban.
The measure to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
passed by a vote of 250-175 after more than an
hour of floor debate in which lawmakers engaged
in often passionate discourse both in favor and in
opposition to the 1993 law.
After lawmakers cast their votes, Rep. Barney
Frank (D-Mass.), the longest-serving openly gay
lawmaker, banged the gavel at the podium and
declared the final vote tally for the bill.
During debate, those who spoke in favor of re-
peal said lifting “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” would end
a discriminatory policy, while opponents of repeal
said open service would jeopardize military effec-
tiveness. Washington Blade photo by Michael Key

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at a news conference following a House vote to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ called the law ‘a funda-

California state Sen. Mark Leno, who’s gay, thinks LGBT history should be taught in public schools.

Gay history lessons in state schools debated

SAN FRANCISCO — While the courts continue to debate the legality of same-
sex marriage, the battle over gay civil rights is moving into another arena in Cali-
fornia: the classroom.
State Sen. Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat, introduced legislation this
week that would amend the state education code, mandating that LGBT history be
included in the curriculum of public schools, the San Francisco Examiner reported.
The bill — dubbed the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful Education Act —

‘NUTCRACKER’
WITH A TWIST
Gay Men’s Chorus revives
holiday classic for festive fun
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com

Arlington resident Josh Bennett was a late bloomer — at

least at dancing.
The 35-year-old Montana native who ended a six-year stint
in New York when he moved to the D.C. area in January, didn’t
start dancing until he was 22. But years of training, a dance
degree, experience dancing in a company and parts in the na-
tional touring companies of “The Producers” and “Oklahoma”
have strengthened his abilities.
He’ll put those skills to good use this weekend as Clarence,
the romantic lead in the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington’s
“Men in Tights: a Pink Nutcracker,” a gay version of the holiday
ballet classic the Chorus is reviving after a popular run in 2004.
The show runs through Sunday at the Lisner Auditorium on the
George Washington University campus in D.C.
Chorus choreographer/director Craig Cipollini says Bennett
was a natural for the part.
“For one, he’s a really, really good dancer,” Cipollini says.
“And having watched him perform, he’s got a certain naive-
té and innocence but at the same time he can be masculine
and sexy. He can be fun. I thought he could carry it. I needed
someone who could be young and innocent to an extent but
who could also play the comedy but also dance and have sex
appeal. He had all the right qualities.”
Bennett, who sings tenor one — the highest male range —
was drawn to the Chorus more for the chance to sing. Though
he has an Actors’ Equity card, he’s working at a concierge at
Archstone in Crystal City. Burned out on New York, D.C. and
the Chorus are giving him a chance to figure out what’s next.
“I’d never hung out with so many gay men at once so hav-
ing that support, I was actually really surprised,” he says. “I
didn’t know what to expect. I knew there would be some sort
of group dynamic but I never expected the level of encourage-
ment and acceptance. It’s really blown my mind how wonderful
this group of men is.”
This weekend’s show, which opens tonight at 8, is half con-
cert, half ballet, much like last year’s “Snow White” production
which, ironically, got delayed for snow.
Chorus Artistic Director Jeff Buhrman, a member since 1986
who’s in his 11th season at the helm, will lead the 30-year-old
Chorus through a nine-song set list that includes Christmas stan-
dards like “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “O Holy Night” along with

ARTSINBRIEF
Make your yuletide gay.

Photo by Jim Coates; courtesy of Church Street Theater

John Robert Keena (left) and Chuck Young in ‘Golden Boy,’ which ends its local run Sunday.

Last chance for ‘Wife Swappers,’ ‘Golden Boy’

Cherry Red’s production of Justin Tanner’s play “Wife Swappers” brings the
horny, homophobic world of middle-aged swinger-sex in the land of Orange County
church-going Republicans under the revealing microscope — an eyeful of full-fron-
tal nudity and wide-open frankness, with sometimes way “too much information” as
the characters let it all hang out at the D.C. Arts Center in Adams Morgan, but only
through Saturday.
The setting is Christmas-time under a holiday party banner reading “Deck The
Halls With Your Balls.” But the play ends on a more serious note, hinting more at
Edward Albee and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff?” than carefree suburban poly-
amorous humping. See it tonight at 7:30 or Saturday when it closes, at 7:30 and 10
p.m. The D.C. Arts Center is at 2438 18th St. N.W. Tickets are $25. 202-462-7833.
“Golden Boy” is another very different play, but it’s also see-it-now-before it closes.
Clifford Odets’ classic kitchen-sink drama of 1937, “Golden Boy” (William Holden made
his film star debut in the 1939 film adaptation), on stage at the Keegan Theatre in the
Church Street Theater in Dupont Circle. It closes there Sunday. Odets, a leading Hol-
lywood screenwriter (for example, “The Sweet Smell of Success” in 1957), shows a man
torn between the lure of big money in the ring as a prize-fighter and the risk of ending his
dream of a career as a violinist by using his hands to slug instead of bow.
The drama is often melo- and the tragic ending is fore-shadowed. But even so
it’s worth seeing, tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. The Church
Street Theater is at 1742 Church St., N.W. Tickets are $30 to $35. 703-892-0202 or
keegantheatre.com.

Webre does ‘Nutcracker’; high-def Hamlet

“The Nutcracker” ballet by gay composer Tchaikovsky has been revamped by
Septime Webre (also gay) and the Washington Ballet, with distinctive twists includ-
ing setting it during the American Revolution, with a heroic George Washington as
the Nutcracker and King George III as the King of the Mice, and a Potomac River
setting for a dance of the cherry blossoms. Through Dec. 26 at the Warner Theatre,
13th and E streets, N.W. Tickets from $31 at 202-397-7328 or washingtonballet.org.
“Hamlet,” is it the greatest play by the greatest ever playwright? And was he in
fact bisexual? Well, to both questions, maybe. At least you can perhaps answer the
first question at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 27, when the play is performed live from London’s
National Theatre on the giant high def screen at the Shakespeare Theatre Compa-
ny’s Harman Hall, 610 F St., N.W. The classic portrait of uncertainty, which of course
ultimately appears to answer the question “to be or not to be” by mostly choosing
the latter, is directed by Nicholas Hynter and features Rory Kinnear in the title role.
Tickets are $20 from 202-547-1122 or ShakespeareTheatre.org/NTLive.
