Pulley simple machine
A pulley is a simple machine that consists of a wheel with a groove, running along
its circumference between the rims of the wheel. A rope or cable passes through
the groove, which is attached to the load on one end, whereas effort is applied to
perform work at the other end. These systems effectively reduce the effort that has
to be applied by the person lifting the weight. Many modern pulleys are now
operated on electricity.
Pg 1

Lever simple machine

A lever is a simple machine that consists of a rigid object (often a bar of some
kind) and a fulcrum (or pivot). Applying a force to one end of the rigid object
causes it to pivot about the fulcrum, causing a magnification of the force at another
point along the rigid object.
Pg 2

Screw simple machine

A screw is a simple machine where an inclined plane is wrapped around a cylinder.
The mechanical advantage created by a screw is based on the closeness of the
threads of a screw. A mechanical advantage is when an input force is amplified by
the use of a tool.
Pg 3

Wedge simple machine

A wedge is a simple machine used to separate two objects, or portions of objects,
through the application of force.

Inclined plane simple machine

Inclined plane a simple machine for elevating objects; consists of plane surface
that makes an acute angle with the horizontal. Tilted flat surface; flat supporting
surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other, used as an aid for
raising or lowering a load
Pg 4

Wheel and axle simple machine

Wheel and axle is one of six simple machines identified by Renaissance scientists
drawing from Greek texts on technology. The wheel and axle consists of a wheel
attached to a smaller axle so that these two parts rotate together in which a force is
transferred from one to the other.
