𝑒 2𝑥 − 4
𝑥
, 𝑥<0
𝑓(𝑥) { 2 − 𝑒
𝑐 , 𝑥=0
𝑥−3 , 𝑥>0
where 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅,
(a) If c = 1, determine whether f(x) is continuous at the point where x = 0.
[4]
(b) Determine the value of c such that f(x) is continuous on the interval (−∞, ∞). Hence, sketch
the graph of f. [2]

2. Sketch the graph of the curve with equation y = (𝑥−2)2 and indicate clearly the turning points and
the asymptotes.

3. (a) Find the area bounded by the parametric curve x = 1 + t2, y = ln (3t + 1), x-axis, x = 1 and
x = 5. [5]

(b) Using the substitution 𝑥 = 4𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃, find the value of ∫0 √4−𝑥 𝑑𝑥. [5]

4. Show that the integrating factor of the differential equation

𝑑𝑦 1
sin 𝑥 − 𝑦 cos 𝑥 = sin 2𝑥 sin 𝑥 is .

[2]
Hence, find the general solution of the differential equation
𝑑𝑦
sin 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 − 𝑦 cos 𝑥 = sin 2𝑥 sin 𝑥 giving your answer in the form y = f(x).

1+√𝑥
[4]
By using the substitution 𝑢 = 1 + √𝑥, show that the error of the approximation is about 8%.

of the definite integral.

A container is formed by rotating the above semi ellipse through 2 radians about the y-axis.
Initially, the container is empty. Water is then poured into the container at a constant rate in
m3 min−1. Time taken to fill up the container is 16 minutes.
(i) Find the volume of the water inside the container when the height of the water level from
the base of the container is h m, h  3.
(ii) Calculate the increasing rate of the volume of the water inside the container.
(iii)Find the rate of change of the water level inside the container at the instant when h = 2 m.

(b) In a chemical reaction, a compound X is formed from two compounds Y and Z. The masses in
grams of X, Y and Z present at time t seconds after the start of the reaction are x, (10 – x) and
(20 – x) respectively. At any time, the rate of formation of X is proportional to the product of
