Project Name/Title: The Second

Eye

Objective: To provide a digital system that would allow blind people to hear what they
have in front of them, so that that can hear the words written in a book or paper that
would allow them to learn about various things and also give them an opportunity to
increase their knowledge .

Possible Solutions: We plan on creating a digital system that would include a

glass ,which with the help of a camera would take pictures of the words infront of it. It
would later turn it into a pdf format. From which using ocr(optical character recognition)
it would convert the text into audio. This way an automated system would be created
that would facilitate reading for blind people.

Literature Review: In the paper titled “A TEXT READING SYSTEM FOR THE
VISUALLY DISABLED” The author proposed a system, where using a device it
would read from a text . Then using matlab and Microsoft win 32 sapi library it
produces speech for the blind which would resonate from a computer. [1]

Neto and Fonseca [2] have described in their paper how they developed similar
application for visual assistance using different approach. While the methods of
information processing tools are similar, such as the use of a camera, TTS and
OCR, additionally they have used a mobile application in an Apple iPhone 5. The
results achieved were almost similar. It only varied due to the additional steps
taken, i.e. pre-processing and post-processing. The calculations performed was
Levenshtein distance to compare texts. These in return helped to improve the
image quality for better reading and adding required filters. Expected
Equipment: Raspberry pi 3b+, camera module, battery 1 cell lipo, glasses.
