DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Elvis. Very few figures in history reach the pinnacles of success, fame, and adoration that merit a universally-acknowledged one-
name moniker. Elvis, the undisputed King of Rock and Roll, certainly is one such celebrity. With a sound and style that uniquely
combined Elvis’ diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a
whole new era of American music and popular culture. His songs are unforgettable, and have stood the test of time. He was a
charismatic performer, and wowed audiences around the world in live performances. There will never be another Elvis.

“Whatever I will become will be what God has chosen for me.” Elvis

Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley came from very humble beginnings and grew up to become one of
the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll. By the mid-1950s, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. Raised by loving,
working-class parents, Presley’s family had little money, and they moved from place to place frequently. He was deeply devoted
to his parents, especially his mother, Gladys, and was raised to have a strong faith in God. Gospel music became an important
influence for him.

“Rock and roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can’t help but move to it. That’s what happens to me. I can’t help it.” Elvis

Presley received his first guitar as a gift from his mother on his 11th birthday in 1946 and had his first taste of musical success
a few years later when he won a school talent show. After graduating in 1953, he worked a number of jobs while pursuing his
musical dream. He cut his first demo record at what later became known as Sun Studio that year. Presley soon began touring
and recording, trying to catch his first big break. “That’s All Right” was Presley’s first single in 1954.

“Do something worth remembering.” Elvis

On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he died of heart failure, which was related to his drug addiction. Since his death, Presley has
remained one of the world’s most popular music icons. Presley’s Memphis home, Graceland, is open to the public, and numerous
fans from around the world visit the legendary residence annually, especially around Presley’s birthday and the anniversary of
his death. Throughout his amazing career, Presley helped popularize rock ‘n’ roll music in America. He also won three Grammy
Awards for his gospel recordings. A major musical force, Presley had 18 Number 1 singles, as well as countless gold and plati-
num albums. An inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Elvis has been recognized for his contributions to rock, country
and gospel. He was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel
Music Hall of Fame.

“Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t goin’ away.” Elvis

Our show is not just a tribute to Elvis and his music, but a valentine to the transformative power of music. Elvis believed in
music’s power to cross cultural and religious divides.

“Until we meet again, may God bless you as He has blessed me.” Elvis

This show comes at a time for me of great personal challenge. Receiving a cancer diagnosis in November, and my subsequent
surgery and treatment, shook my world. Everything was uncertain. I wasn’t sure how life would proceed. I was scared. More
than fearing my personal suffering, I was afraid for the people I loved most: my son, my brother, my other siblings, my extended
family and friends, and my beloved students. How would my diagnosis and its aftermath affect them? God has provided for me
in countless ways over the past few months, his greatest gift to me being my Cathedral Catholic family. My students and this
show have been a source of great joy. Even though the past weeks have meant a crazy calendar of rehearsals scheduled around
chemotherapy and radiation treatments, this CCHS Drama Cast and Crew have rallied around me, and worked together with
such compassion, dedication, and love. That love has and will continue to sustain me into my complete recovery. I am truly
blessed. We hope you feel this love as you enjoy our efforts tonight. May God continue to bless all of you as He has so richly
blessed me.

Much love,
Katie Wilson
