MIDTERM VOLLEYBALL

1. The sport volleyball originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of
popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer
among participation sports. The game of volleyball originally called “mintonette,” was invented in
1895 by William G. Morgan after the invention of basketball only four years before. The game of
volleyball was quite a bit different from what we're used to. It was played on a smaller 25'x50'
court, with an unlimited number of players hitting the ball an unlimited number of times, on either
side of a 6'6" high net. Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above
the floor, just above the average man’s head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to
Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps
“volleyball” would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College
the first game of “volleyball” was played.

2. The 6 Basic Skills in Volleyball

There are six basic volleyball skills in volleyball they are the passing, setting, spiking, blocking,
digging, and serving.

Passing - the most important skill in volleyball. If you can't pass the serve, then you won't ever put
your team in a position to score a point.

Serving is often undervalued. Many coaches don't teach players to serve aggressive and use this
opportunity to give the team an advantage for scoring points.

Blocking - is perhaps the least taught skill in volleyball. Players can get away with poor blocking skills
because not blocking isn't going to hurt the team as much as being poor at executing other skills in
volleyball.

Digging - is another skill that isn't focused on quite as much as most skills in volleyball. The setter
position is considered to be the most important position in volleyball. The setter basically runs the
team offense.

In volleyball, spiking is the act of scoring a point by slamming the ball over the net into the opposing
court effectively and aggressively. In many ways, the mechanism of volleyball spiking is not
altogether different from the act of slam dunking in the sport of basketball or smashing in the sport
of tennis.

3. STRONG SIDE – When a right-handed hitter is hitting from the left-front position or when a left-
handed hitter is hitting from the right-front position.

STUFF – A ball that is deflected back to the attacking team’s floor by the opponent’s blockers. A slang
term for “block.”
TURNING IN – the act of an outside blocker turning his/her body into the court so as to ensure the
blocked ball is deflected into the court and lands in-bounds.

UNDERHAND SERVE – a serve in which the ball is given a slight under-hand toss from about waist
high and then struck with the opposite closed fist in an “underhand pitching” motion.

WEAK SIDE – When a right-handed player is hitting from right-front position or when a left-handed
player is hitting from the left-front position.

WIPE – when a hitter pushes the ball off of the opposing block so it lands out of bounds

YELLOW CARD – a warning from an official indicated by the display of a yellow card. Any player or
coach who receives two yellow cards in a match is disqualified. A single yellow card does not result in
loss of point or serve.

4. Ball In - It is one of the line judge signals in court of the volleyball the big rectangular line in the
court called the boundery line, the line judge the one who look if the ball touches inside the
boundery line the he says BALL IN which means score of the other side team.

Ball out - one of the line judges signal and theres a lot of instances that may say ball out it simply
when the ball touches beyond the boundery line in volleyball court the it is ball out and that is the
score of the team, then also there's an instances that ball hit in the ceiling then its considered ball
out and score of the other team.

Ball Touched - If the ball touches the ceiling then goes to the other side of the net it is out, if the
ball touches the ceiling then lands in on the same side of the net it's down, and if the ball touches
the ceiling then lands out it's just a touch.

5. The Scorer

I also watch last year and more on highlights on last year game and as i watch,i noticed and
compared this year game of volleyball in general is seemed calm and controlled. I looked and watched
the game of DLSU lade spikers VS Ateneo lady eagles in four set of game 25 -17, 17 -25, 25-17,15-15
which DLSU lady spikers win and beat the defending champion ateneo lady eagles , as i watch the
game i wass impress in the play that they made and i'd focus on the team DLSU lady spikers because
the made a great team work and coordination through out the game i also adored DLSU spikers for
the skill they showned through out the game that lead them to victory. im suprised to some players
like Thea Gagate like being a 6 foot that make the Defense of DLSU solid and made Lady eagles being
countered flying above the clouds.
