Special effect colour
concentrates
Wilson Color has introduced a new range of
colour concentrates for injection moulding,
extrusion, blow moulding and calendering.
The concentrates cover a range of special
decorative effects, including granite, paper,
textile, metallic, fluorescent and
phosphorescent effects, and are expected to
appeal particularly to the consumer goods,
cosmetics, garden furniture, and stationery
markets. The company developed a new
manufacturing technique to ensure even
distribution throughout the concentrate.

Inorganic colour pigments
Ferro Corp’s Color Division, Cleveland, has
announced the latest additions to its Geode
product line of complex inorganic colour
pigments. Included are new brown pigments
with improved heat stability - V-10111, V-
10112, V-10113, V-101 14 and F-61 l-2. Also
new is an iron-free mahogany brown
pigment, V-12100 for rigid PVC siding,
windows, and other profiles. It is said to
produce significantly higher tinting strength
for lower cost. V-9238 is a cobalt blue
pigment that is said to offer improved heat
stability plus lightfastness, chemical
resistance, and weatherability. A black
pigment, V-302-2 is for use in most
thermoplastic and thermosets which is said to
offer improved tinting strength.

Desiccant masterbatch
A desiccant masterbatch has been developed
by Cabot Plastics as a simple and cost-
effective method of reducing problems caused
by moisture.. The product, Cabot PE8999,

has been introduced because of the growing
use of recycled materials, whose storage and
specification may result in unusually high
levels of moisture. The benefits of PE8999,
according to Cabot, include reducing or
preventing lacing and windows in films,
surface defects in mouldings, porosity and die
build-up. The masterbatch can allow higher
proportions of recycled material to be used in
some applications where the current
maximum level is restricted by moisture
problems. PE8999 is a concentrated product
used at various addition levels, depending on
moisture content. Every 1% added absorbs up
to 1500 ppm of moisture, producing a
chemical bond which is irreversible at all
temperatures used in plastics processing, says
Cabot, The material is compatible with
LDPE, EVA, LLDPE, HDPE and PP. For
film extrusion and moulding applications,
addition rates of l-3% are generally
recommended, while 2-5 % is usually required
for compounding. The masterbatch has good
dilution and mixing characteristics, so it can
be added directly with resin into an extruder
hopper or pre-blended with resin in a drum or
tumble blender.

World carbon black
In a study of the global carbon black
business, Freedonia estimates it is growing at
about 3.6% per annum, and will reach 7.2
million tonnes by 1998, from 6 million in
1993. The rubber industry absorbs about 93 %
of this total volume, tyres alone consume
61% of all carbon black.
There have been few global trends in this
industry, according to Freedonia. The
analysts say the Japanese industry finally fell
into recession in 1992/3. while demand
through the rest of the Pacific Rim has
remained strong.
