Experiment No.4
Object:-
To determine the resistance to wear due to rubbing of aggregate pieces among each other by Deval
Attrition Test.
Apparatus:-
Deval Attrition testing machine: it consists of two hollow cast iron cylinder closed at one end
provided with iron cover at the other end. The cylinders are mounted on a shaft inclined at 30o with
respect to the axis of rotation
Balance and IS sieve with opening size 5cm, 3.75cm, 1.7mm

Procedure:-
The dry aggregates weighing 5kg passing 5cm sieve and retained on 3.75cm sieve are placed in one
of the cylinders and the lid is fixed. The machine is rotated at 30 to 33 revolutions per minute for
10,000 revolutions. At the end of the test, the stones are removed by sieving on a 12 mesh sieve
(1.70mm opening sieve). The material passing this sieve is considered as the amount of wear due to
attrition. Sometimes wet attrition test is also carried out.
Calculations:-
Let the original weight of the sample=W1g
Wt. of the material passing 12no. Mesh sieve after the test=W2g
Percentage wear = [W2/W1 x 100]
Sometimes the results are expressed in terms of French Coefficient of wear, which is
= (40/perentage of wear)
Result:-
The attrition value of the given sample of aggregates is _______________%
