FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Electrical Power Gen.

Elect. .ENGINEERING DEPT. SHEET 3 (Dr/Hosam)

1. The required fuel input to 5 different generating units in a generating station

were found to be:

H1  0.0040P12  8.0P1  12 MBtu hr

H 2  0.0048P22  6.4P2  10 MBtu hr
H3  0.0050P32  7.5P3  11 MBtu hr
H 4  0.0056P42  8.6P4  9 MBtu hr
H5  0.0063P52  8.9P5  8 MBtu hr

The fuel cost is 6.25 LE/MBtu and the minimum and maximum loadings of each
unit are 20MW and 100MW, respectively. In a unit commitment study,Arrange
these units according to the following priority lists:
i. Fuel cost-based list (at 80% of Pmax of each unit)
ii. Equal lambda list ( at λ = 54 LE/MWh)
iii. Incremental fuel cost-based list

2. During a certain period of time (t), the following loading and spinning reserve
requirement on the station of prob. 1 was 200 MW distributed equally on the
lower two units in the incremental fuel cost-based list. On the previous period
(t-1) the requirement on the station was 280MW where the extra power was fed
by a single additional unit.Write each of the commitment vectors U(t),U(t-1)
,and from which find the vector of commitment changes Y(t-1).If the power
requirement on the station in the next period (t+1) will be 300MW which will
be fed by adding 2 units, write Y(t) and then find U(t+1).
