1 Context
Replacing the UPEU has the following impacts on the base station:
The universal power and environment interface unit (UPEU) is a power module in a BBU3900 or BBU3910. The
UPEUd can be installed in a BBU3900 or BBU3910, but the UPEUc can only be installed in a BBU3900.
If a base station is configured with one UPEU, replacing the UPEU will cut off the power supply to the BBU and
interrupt all the services carried by the BBU.
If a base station is configured with two UPEUs, replacing one UPEU will cause the failure to monitor the external
equipment.
The following figure shows the position of the UPEU in the BBU in most common cases.
There are two possible positions for UPEU in the BBU, slot 19 only or Slot18 + slot19.

Note:
Regarding sites where BBU LTE and BBU GU are connected:
If a single UPEU is installed in BBU LTE, replacing this board will disrupt all services carried by the LTE BBU (L800 /
L2600), but not affect GU BBU.
If a single UPEU is installed in BBU GU, replacing this board will disrupt all services carried by the GU BBU (G900 /
G1800 / U900 / U2100), but not affect LTE BBU.
2 Process
The following figure shows the process for replacing the UPEU.
Optional: For a GBTS, run the LST GCELL command on the BSC LMT to query the administrative
state of the cells under the base station. Then, run the SET GCELLADMSTAT command with the
ADMSTAT parameter set to LOCK to block all cells under the base station.
Optional: For a NodeB, run the BLK ULOCELL command on the NodeB LMT to block all cells
under the NodeB.
Optional: For an eNodeB, run the BLK CELL command on the eNodeB LMT to block all cells under
the eNodeB
Instruct the site engineer to replace the board.
Receive the information that the site engineer has replaced the board.
Unblock all the cells under the base station.
NOTE:
In a multimode base station, the operation of blocking the related cells must be performed on all
modes involved.
Optional: For a GBTS, run the SET GCELLADMSTAT command with the ADMSTAT parameter set
to UNLOCK on the BSC LMT to unblock all cells under the base station.
Optional: For a NodeB, run the UBL LOCELL command on the NodeB LMT to unblock all cells
under the NodeB.
Optional: For an eNodeB, run the UBL CELL command on the eNodeB LMT to unblock all cells
under the eNodeB.
Perform the operation of Browsing the Current Alarm to compare the alarms queried with the alarms
queried before the replacement. Then handle the added alarms accordingly.
Inform the site engineer that the remote operations are completed, and ask the site engineer to verify
the services.
Take proper ESD protection measures, for example, put on an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD
gloves, to prevent electrostatic damage to the boards, modules, or other electronic components.
Record all the cable connections on the panel of the module to be replaced.
Turn off the power switch for the UPEU to power off the UPEU.
Remove the power cable, monitoring cable, and alarm cable from the UPEU, as shown in the following
figure.
WARNING:
Before removing the BBU power cable, turn off the BBU circuit breaker on the power device that
supplies power to the BBU. If there is no such circuit breaker, remove the BBU power cable
connector from the power device.
Loosen the two M3 screws on the panel, and pull out the UPEU, as shown in the following figure.
WARNING:
When removing a board, hold the board with both hands and remove it from the subrack slowly.
When transporting a board, hold the board with both hands.
Install the new board, lower the ejector levers, tighten the screws on the board panel to 0.6 N·m (5.31
lbf·in.), and reconnect the cables.
WARNING:
Ensure that the BBU power cable for a BBU added to a running base station must be connected
to the BBU first and then to the power equipment. The operations in the reverse sequence may
cause component damage or personal injury.
Turn on the power switch for the UPEU to power on the UPEU.
Check the status of the new board by observing the status of indicators:
Take off the ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves, and pack up all tools.
Inform the remote engineer that the board has been replaced.
