Missing You

What is it like?
Holding the air inside, wanting
Nothing more than to take a deep breath
But when you do, the only thing that enters is water

Grasping for something to hold on to

Your vision slowly going dark as you sink deeper
Into unconsciousness, into the water
Accepting your fate after a long battle

Did you lose your strength?

Did you injure yourself? Break a bone?
Did you just give up, or did you fight til the last breath?

After that day, the same thing happened to me

I held everything inside

I just wanted that gasp of air, anywhere I could find it
Only i couldn’t
I dove in and it was too dark and I could not see

I waited for someone to pull me out

But their eyes were watching me drown
I don’t think they knew how to swim either
I wanted, for a time, to follow you down

Holding that breath was all I could do

I almost swallowed that ocean, but
As I opened my mouth, I saw the surface

I can breathe now; I know you can too
