Cho, J., Castle, S., Burchinal, M., Horm, D., Guss, S., &Bingham, G. (2018). Peer effects on

low-income children's learning and development. Journal of psychology. Volume 71. 1-

17.

Studies have shown that children learn and develop behaviors based on their immediate

environment. Young children observe behaviors from others and that is what helps mold them.

This article touches base on how the environment of young children, the preschool students in

particular, results in their cognitive and social development. It defines how social learning theory

is suggestive in that the skills and behaviors possessed by fellow preschool peers is a factor in

children of the preschool age group. There is further discussion on the theoretical explanations of

peer processes and how it relates to early care and education. Students researched in this

particular journal article were primarily from low income families. They were preschool students

from different racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. The studies conducted were primarily

used to serve those students from lower income families as opposed to their more fortunate

counterparts. Students who participate in the early learning programs do not tend to have the

same opportunities afforded to them as students with a more affluent background.
