Unit 2 Sentences, Utterences and Propositions

Summary

This unit explained sentences are a series of words that are united by the grammar of language rules
that express complete thoughts. This is not a physical event or physical object. For example, I am a
student.Speech is the sound of speech, produced by humans.To distinguish words and sentences, we
usually use quotation marks ("....") in written speech. For example, a piece of utterance said by a certain
person "I am a student".Propositions are part of the meaning of declarative utterances that describe
several circumstances. In addition to declarative sentences, propositions are also clearly involved in the
meaning of interrogative and imperative sentences. For example, "Get out of here at this time!", "I'm
afraid I have to ask you to leave." In these two sentences, the speaker confirms the proposition.

The relationship between references and speech is not directly like the understanding and proposition,
but there are similarities. Both referring and saying are actions taken by certain people on certain
occasions. Most utterances contain one or more referral actions.The referral action is to choose a
particular reference by the speaker in a particular set of utterances.

Summary

Reference : relation between piece of language and the things in the world. A referent is concrete object
or concept that is designated by a word or expression, for example: Historically, there was only one
person called George Washington, the first president of US, but he can be referred to in a text in many
ways, such as:the president,Mr. Washington,he

The different reference can have the same referent. Example : my sister go to the beach Sense : its place
in a system of semantic relationships with other expressions in the language. Sense consists of 'semantic
properties'. Example: man ( married ) and boy (un married)
