Lap Timer DLT1-GPS Information (2.11)
1. Connectors
Power jack: 1.35 x 3.8 mm jack, center pin positive (the timer is internally protected from
reverse polarity).
Power cable: the wire marked with a white stripe is positive (+12V).
2. LED display
The display is used to show both lap times and user selectable information. The lap timer
works like a conventional lap timer by showing the lap time on the top display and the
lap number on the bottom display when the car passes start/finish. However, after a few
seconds (this is programmable) the display switches to display user selectable
information. This is normally current-lap-vs.-best-lap-time-delta and speed (this can be
changed in Setup, parameters P1 and P2).
3. Buttons
There are four buttons used to control and program the lap timer – “Exit”, “Up”, “Down”,
and “Best”. The functionality of the buttons depends on if the lap timer is in “street
mode”, “track mode” or “setup mode”.
If both “Exit” and “Best” are depressed for about 3 seconds the lap memory is erased and
the timer is reset.
4. Display modes
Street mode:
After power-up the timer will operate as a digital dash (a.k.a. "street mode") where speed
is displayed on the lower 3 digit display. However, before he timer works as a dash the
GPS module must get a location fix which can take up to 5 minutes if the timer has been
off for a long time or as little as a few seconds if it's a warm start. Note that if the car is
indoors it might not get a location fix due to signal obstruction. While the GPS module is
searching for a location the progress is shown on the display:
Stage 1 - GPS is searching for a location fix (takes 5 seconds to several minutes)
The 3 digit speed display will show a moving bar indicating that the GPS module is alive
and searching for a GPS fix.
Stage 2 - GPS module is receiving valid speed and location info (i.e. timer ready)
The 3 digit speed display will show 0 (or actual GPS speed if the car is moving)
The 5 digit rpm display will show will show track start/finish status:
“-----“ means no track start/finish line (located within a mile from the current position)
found in memory
“blank” means a valid nearby start/finish line found in memory
Stored lap time information can be reviewed by pressing the “Up”, “Down” or “Best”
button. The “Up” and “Down” buttons are used to scroll through the stored lap times.
Pressing “Best” will display the best recorded lap time. The “Exit” button will return the
display to show “live” information (i.e. speed).
Track mode
Track mode is when the timer is operating as a lap timer. In this mode the top display
will show current-lap-vs.-best-lap-time-delta, i.e. the time delta between the best lap in
the session and the current lap (this is described in more detail below), while the bottom
display shows speed. Every time the vehicle passes the start/finish line, the display will
show the lap time and session lap number for 5 seconds and then return to show best time
delta and speed. (All this assumes default values in advance setup, see Advance setup
below.)
In order for the timer to enter track mode the track start/finish line must be known. The
timer has memory to hold the start/finish line for 32 track locations. During power-up,
after the timer has obtained a valid GPS location, the track start/finish memory is
searched for a start/finish line located within a mile from the current position and if found
it will be loaded and used. If no start/finish line is found (indicated by “-----“ displayed
on the top display) the timer must be programmed with the start/finish line location
before it can be used. This is done by pressing the “Exit” button just as the car is passing
the start/finish line (car must be traveling at 5 mph or faster), this will capture the
start/finish line position and direction, record the s/f data to memory, enter track mode
and start timing the lap. If a start/finish line is found in memory (indicated by a blank
upper display) the timer will automatically enter track mode and start timing the lap when
the car passes the start/finish line.
Setup mode:
Setup is used to change advanced timer-specific parameters. Setup mode can only be
entered at power up by holding the “Exit” button while the unit is powered up. When
setup mode is entered, the bottom display will show P1 and the top display will show the
data value for parameter 1. The Up and Down buttons are used to increase or decrease
the parameter data value, the Best button will move to the next parameter value and the
Exit button will exit setup mode. The Up and Down buttons will repeat (at an increasing
rate) if held down for more than a second.
5. Setup parameters
The current lap vs. best lap time delta display will show how the vehicle is doing on the
current lap compared to the best lap in the session. It’s doing this by comparing the
current lap timing with recorded information from the best lap. The first time after
passing start/finish, the timer will start record timing information as reference data.
During this time the display will show -.-- indicating that it’s in recording mode. For
subsequent laps, the time for the current lap is continuously compared to the recorded
time information and the difference is shown on the display. If the current time is better
(i.e. less) than the recorded time (indicated by a - sign on the display), then that time will
become the new reference time for subsequent laps. The recorded reference time
information is lost when the power is turned off , i.e. each session will start with
generating new reference data.
The lap times stored in memory can be erased by pressing the “Exit” button and “Best”
button for three seconds.
