Weaving: It is widely used method to making fabrics. In weaving two or more sets of yarns are
interlocked in which lengthwise yarns are called “warp” and breadth wise yarns are called weft. We
can define weaving as process of interlacing warp and weft to make a fabric. Strength of the fabric
depends on the fiber as well as type of weave.

Knitting:
Knitting: In this method, fabric is constructed by interlocking two or more yarns with needles. Most
often, one thread is used to create loop for interlocking and another yarn is looped in it. The ways
loops are interlocked and carried determines pattern or shape of the fabric.

Netting: To form a pattern or give a shape, yarns are interloped, interlaced, knotted and twisted to
make an openwork fabric which usually follows a pattern.

Felting: In this method, fibers don’t process to make yarns instead they are directly converted into
fabric. This method is very popular for wool fabrics as they can easily be matched with one another.

Braiding: This method is used to make narrow and stretchy fabrics in which yarns are interlaced or
interlocked lengthwise or diagonally.

Bonding: Banding fabrics are processed through chemical, mechanical, thermal process or with
combination of these. For example using adhesive for bending is called adhesive bonding.
Thermoplastic bond is made when thermoplastic fibers are bonded with heat. Bonded fabrics are
cheaper as compared to woven or knitted fabrics. These fabrics are mostly used in disposable
products.
Tufting: In this method, yarns are inserted into fabric surface which may be cut down later or left
intact.

SUMMARY

Hotel uses textiles in varied places like soft furnishing, floors, wall fabrics and all linen used in hotel.
Since housekeeping department is responsible for all kind of linen in a hotel, so housekeeping
employees must have basic knowledge of textile fibers, their general characteristics, processing and
so on. Housekeeping department handle all linen in a hotel be it guest’s clothing, bath linen, bedroom
linen, employees’ uniforms, furnishing or other
department’s linen. This chapter gives basic detail of textile fibers. The classification and
characteristics of some fibers are discussed in detail which would help in fabric selection.
Fiber is considered as the smallest unit for a textile fabric. A fiber is then woven to make yarn which
the fundamental unit of fabric. Later yarn is processed to make a fabric. There are various
methods of making a fabric from yarn like knitting, netting, felting, braiding, bonding, tufting etc. As
fabric is processed of yarn, so the properties and characteristics of a fabric are also determined by
the type of fibers or yarns used. Generally, most of the hotels prefer blended fabric of various fibers
for their better performance, texture, color, luster, drape and lower prices.
