Chapter 29 Iub Satellite Transmission

29.1 Introduction
29.1.1 Definition

Iub satellite transmission refers to the satellite-based connection on the Iub interface
between the RNC and the NodeB.
In general, the data between the RNC and the NodeB is transmitted on terrestrial
transport networks that can be based on PDH, SDH, MSTP, microware, ATM, or IP. In
some remote areas, coastal islands, deserts, and uninhabited areas where terrestrial
transport networks are unavailable or difficult to deploy, satellite transmission can
overcome this difficulty.

29.1.2 Purposes

Since satellite communication has many benefits such as larger coverage, minor
influence by landforms, good mobility for emergency communications, easy link
leasing or deployment, and easy bandwidth control, Iub satellite transmission makes
the Iub interface easier to deploy.
But satellite communication has demerits such as higher costs in equipment and link
leasing, and high delay, so a terrestrial transport network, if available, is preferable.

29.3 Impact
29.3.1 On System Performance

The feature has the following impact on system performance:

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

3
RAN Feature Description Chapter 29 Iub Satellite Transmission

 Satellite transmission quality is liable to environmental conditions. Bit errors may

lead to bad quality in calls and data services, lower efficiency in transmission, or
even call failures.
 The delay is higher than terrestrial transmission. Satellite transmission usually
brings about the Round Trip Time (RTT) in the range 500–700 ms. High delay or
RTT causes slow call connections and voice delay.

29.3.2 On Other Features

No impact on transmission resource management.

29.4 Technical Description

Figure 1.5 Satellite network on the Iub interface

The network consists of a satellite and earth stations.

I. Satellite

Geostationary satellites usually apply to satellite communication. The satellite orbits

at a distance of 36000 km from the earth and has an angular orbital velocity equal to
the earth orbital velocity.
The satellite consists of control system, communication system (antennas and
repeaters), telemeter system, power supply system, and temperature control system.

II. Earth Station

Earth stations have different apertures:

 Large aperture terminal (or earth station)
Earth stations with a large aperture support high data rate, but cost much. User
data is transferred to the terrestrial network for communication.
 Small aperture terminal (earth station) or Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT)
Using the VSAT-based system to build up a private network will cause lower
cost, smaller aperture, and flexible deployment.
An earth station consists of antenna system, transceiver, channel terminal (modem),
communication control system, and the power supply system. Its interface should
support G.703 to connect RNC and NodeB.

29.4.4 Networking for Satellite Transmission

The deployment of a satellite network has little to do with the locations of earth
stations. All satellite links are charged in an accumulating way. In terms of reliability
and delay, it is recommended to apply star topology to satellite transmission on the
Iub interface, as shown in Figure 1.6.
3G Iub transmission links can be set up in the satellite network in the following three
ways:

I. Leasing Existing Large Earth Station

If links provided by the existing earth stations are leased, it is not necessary to take
into account the networking for satellite transmission or to manage satellite
equipment. Therefore, service launch can be speeded up, but the networking is
restricted by the locations of earth stations.

II. Utilizing Existing VSAT System

New sites are set up in the existing VSAT system. This saves costs in routine
management and maintenance of the VSAT system, but the bandwidth is limited. This
way is applicable to small-scale networks.

III. Setting up New VSAT System

A new VSAT system is set up. This way enables clear network structures and easy
capacity expansion, but it requires heavy investment on a lump-sum basis.

Huawei Technologies Proprietary

7
RAN Feature Description Chapter 29 Iub Satellite Transmission

In general, 3G NodeBs in satellite transmission mode are usually deployed in remote

areas where there usually might be no large earth stations nearby. In addition, the
bandwidth requirement of remote base station is not very large. Consequently, the
VSAT system is a suitable choice. Figure 1.6 shows the VSAT system on the Iub
interface.

RAN Feature Description Chapter 29 Iub Satellite Transmission

Compared with terrestrial circuit-based transmission, the RTT value on the Iub
interface in satellite transmission mode is increased by 500–700 ms. Consequently,
the Uu interface RTT value carried on the Iub interface is increased by 500–700 ms.
The optimum Uu and Iub parameters should be adopted in this environment.
If the Iub satellite transmission option is enabled, the RNC will automatically adopt the
optimum parameters for the NodeB using satellite transmission as follows:
 Load monitor and load control period parameters for the NodeB using satellite
transmission
 Optimum parameters related to the sliding window size and timer of the RLC at
the data link layer
 Optimum parameters of the FP transport synchronization timer
 Optimum activation time of radio links
 Optimum outer loop power control parameters to prevent voice and data quality
from control hysteresis
 Constraining the handover procedure: If the delay variation is out of the soft
combination range during soft handover, only hard handover is allowed.
If the Iub satellite transmission option is disabled, the RNC will deny the NodeB using
satellite transmission.

29.6 Implementation
29.6.1 Enabling Iub Satellite Transmission

I. Install Hardware

The RNC and the NodeB connect to the satellite equipment through E1 ports.

II. Configure Data

To configure the data, perform the following steps:

2) Configure transportation layer data as terrestrial transmission.
3) Execute the MML command ADD NODEB to add NodeB, set the IUB Trans
Delay to the value of Iub RTT, set the Satellite Trans Ind to TRUE.
4) Use the default LDM parameters and default LDC period.

III. Verify the Enabled Feature

Calls are made on satellite-based NodeBs.

29.6.2 Reconfiguring Iub Satellite Transmission Parameters

5) Execute the MML command MOD NODEB to reconfigure the IUB Trans Delay
of a satellite-based NodeB.
6) Execute the command SET SATLDM to reconfigure the LDM parameters.
7) Execute the command SET SATLDCPERIOD to reconfigure the LDC period.

29.6.3 Disabling Iub Satellite Transmission

Execute the MML command RMV NODEB remove the NodeB or the MOD NODEB
command to set the satellite transmission indication to FALSE.
