Title: Lahore – in Context I

Assignment - II:
Why is it so important to recover our sense of place, and awareness, in analyses of our
immediate surroundings, neighborhoods and city? A sociological analysis of an urban
surrounding contains several salient features. The reading attached is the chapter ‘Lahore: A
City Transformed’ (pages 54 to 95), from the book, ‘The Raj, Lahore, and Bhai Ram Singh’ by
Pervaiz Vandal and Sajida Vandal. Published by the National College of Arts in 2006, the book
traces the architectural debates in India during the Raj, locates them in the Punjab and
Lahore and elaborates on the works of Bhai Ram Singh as an example of the fusion of the
west and east and a development of the living tradition of the architecture of the region.

Task 1: You are required to identify the three typologies of urban networks present in Lahore.
Analyze and critique it graphically through sketches, diagrams and visual representations.
Write a 350 to 500 word analysis of the above task. . The text and visuals should be composed
on an A3 page in landscape orientation.
