ARGENTINA PEANUT UPDATE – The Argentina peanut industry is under similar circumstances as the U.S. due to the Coronavirus
Pandemic. Main businesses are working from home as plants are under reparation since the new crop has not arrived. Peanuts should be
ready for shelling in about 2/3 weeks. Blanching facilities are processing old crop and shipping from Argentina as best they can under
the restrictions.
The 2020 crop is looking good. Recent rains have helped and perhaps a little late for a small percentage of the Argentina area
that had been hit with a dry spell. More rains occurred this week. They wish for sunny weather and good temperatures so they can dig
and harvest. 2020 crop is predicted to be 10% less on acreage and yields down slightly due to the dry conditions late in the season.
TORNADO HITS JONESBORO. ARKANSAS – A tornado packing 70+ mile per hour winds hit Jonesboro, Arkansas last week. The
storm injured 6 and many in the peanut industry expressed concern about the new peanut shelling plant. Talked with Tommy Jumper,
CEO, DELTA PEANUT, and he reported:
“I’m humbled by the number of inquiries and encouraging notes after Saturday’s tornado. We’d like our friends both new
and old to know that we’re okay. The tornado that hit Jonesboro so hard tracked several miles across farming country after it left the
city. Our ‘Delta Family’ had many near misses but none of our employees or members suffered a direct hit. The construction site was
spared along with all the many workers who are diligently working to build our facilities. We pray today being thankful for being
spared and asking strength and encouragement for our neighbors who were not. Join us, if you will, as we lift them up.”
ALABAMA TO HOLD GROWER REFERENDUM - The Alabama Peanut Producers Association (APPA) has been certified by the
Alabama Board of Agriculture and Industries as the authorized association to conduct a referendum among the peanut producers in the
State of Alabama to determine whether or not an assessment shall be collected on all peanuts marketed in Alabama.
Notice is hereby given that the referendum will be held on April 9, 2020, during the established office hours between 8 a.m.
and 4 p.m. All persons engaged in the production of peanuts for the years 2017, 2018 or 2019 shall be eligible to vote.
The polling locations in each county that produces or processes peanuts have been secured and are listed on their website.
In the event the referendum is carried by a majority of those voting, the assessment will be collected upon an order of the
Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries to all persons, firms and corporations engaged in the business of purchasing peanuts in this
state by deducting from the purchase price of peanuts at the rate of twelve and one-half cents ($.125) per one hundred pounds of peanuts
Sold ($2.50 per ton). The proceeds will be used for the purpose of contributing toward the financing of programs in research, education,
promotion and other methods designed to increase the consumption of peanuts and peanut products, as well as the general well-being of
the peanut producers. For info, contact Jacob Davis, APPA Executive Director, at 334-792-6482 or email: jdavis@alpeanuts.com
