Theory II

E-Learning Assignment #1 - Debussy Assignment

Due: Class 2, April 2

Read Day-O'Connell, "Debussy, Pentatonicism, and the Tonal Tradition" (pdf on Moodle) from the
beginning through the break at the top of p. 237.

Spend time with the musical examples - find recordings and listen to the music being discussed.

Make a list of the primary points the author makes in this section of the article.

For each score example that uses a pentatonic mode, identify the Pentatonic mode used with its tonic pitch
and quality (e.g. "B-flat major Pentatonic").

Day-O'Connell downplays the idea that Debussy's use of the Pentatonic mode is a form of musical
exoticism. For a more thorough discussion of musical exoticism (in the form musical Orientalism, one of
its common manifestations), please read “Orientalism and Musical Style” by Derek B. Scott (link on
Moodle).

What is Scott’s primary point? Add this to your list of points from the previous article.

———

After reading both articles, do you agree or disagree with Day-O'Connell's assessment that Debussy is not
engaged in exoticism? If you are not sure, what other information would you need in order to formulate
an opinion?

Write a substantive paragraph or two in response to this question, using ideas drawn from the articles to
support your position.

Email your writing to me by Thursday, April 2.
