E-Learning Assignment #2 - Harmony/Pitch and Formal Analysis Chart for Final Project
Due: Class 6, April 10

This analysis should include both form and harmony/pitch content for both pieces.

FORM:
For almost all works, this should include making a chart using A, A’, B, C, C’’, etc - type labels. Important
harmonic or other information can be included on the chart if relevant (ie: as it is in a Sonata form chart).
Classical vocabulary like Sentence, Period, Subject, Answer, Stretto, Rounded Binary, Continuous/
Sectional, etc may be applicable either in actuality or by analogy. In most cases the formal chart will need
at least two levels of specificity — one at the most holistic level (ie: what is the form of this entire work/
movement) as well as a finer-grained formal chart (ie: the A section is itself ternary, etc.).

I will be posting a presentation of what formal charts might look like for a number of
different pieces on Class 4 (April 6) — feel free to use this as a starting point for your
formal analysis.

HARMONY/PITCH:
If your works are tonal or quasi-tonal, your harmonic analysis should include all key centers, a full roman
numeral analysis, as well as a functional analysis (not necessarily functional bass).

If your works contain non-tonal but triadic harmony (ie: Debussy), your harmonic analysis should include
all pitch centers, lead sheet symbols, scalar collections (ie: hexatonic, octatonic, WT, modes, etc.), as well as
a ‘non-tonal functional analysis’ (ie: making analogies to ‘tonic’ or ‘subdominant’ or ‘dominant’ functions.)

Analyses of melodic or motivic material may also be included, if relevant. These analyses should include
formalizing important pitch or intervallic content (ie: the main motive is x prime form, the preponderance
of interval x is particularly important, etc.), and noting how it is transformed/manipulated/reiterated, etc.

If your works do not fit into any of these categories, we will have to Google Meet & figure out what to do!

The presentations I will be posting for classes 1-3 and 5 will be devoted to various common
methods of harmony/pitch analysis (Roman Numerals w/ Chromaticism, Set Theory,
Symmetrical Collections, Scales, etc.) Feel free to use these as a starting point for your
analysis if they apply to your work!
