Ogede, O. (2001). Oral Tradition and Modern Storytelling: Revisiting Chinua Achebe's

Short Stories. International Fiction Review, 28(1).

Ogede's goal of writing this essay is to rekindle interest in the short history of Achebe.

According to him, Achebe's role as a short stories’ writer cannot match that of other world-

famous writers. Although the new Achebe novels so influence the traditional narrative, this has

surprisingly escaped the attention of its critics. Ogede notes that some critics have tried to

completely deny Achebe's oral heritage, since his long-time partner, Ossie Enekwe, who

supports Achebe "has developed as a writer in an environment where the form of short stories is

not taken seriously. Achebe takes his heritage seriously, and for this, he wrote "Dead man's

path," a story that shows the conflict between the value systems and visions of the world. Ogede

also says that when the subject of his stories is light, is still able to capture the interest of the

reader with reasonable technical narration, as is clearly shown "the madman", which presents the

first story of the collection, is titled Ozo, one of the most prestigious awards of the community,
