Sub: Gulde Lines for Configuration of standard arrangement for
composite steel! girder ROBS
Refi) Railway Board's letter No.2002/CE-MBROYGA(Policy) dated 17.7.2009
: ji) Railway Board's letter No.2002/CE-VBRO/194(esign) dated 10-11-2009
With @ development of road network and increase in vatfic both on roads as well
as Railways, the requirement of providing ROBs have increased many fold in recent
yeats. It is obse ved that different Railways are following different configurations for
ROBS which requi'e duplication of efforts and the projects are delayed.A need was being felt for qute Some lime to standerdize the span arrangement
and issue standard designs for steel composite girdors so thal the planning end
Ceclgn efforts by various rallways are reduced and work can be done faster. Certain
her advantages of Steel composite girders are:
on
i) Fabrication can be done in work shop with good QC.
') No temporary staging and continued speed restriction required.
il) Light weight and therefore easy, fast and safer method of launching.
¥) Very fast construction can be achieved.
+) Easy to dismantle if required and re-use the stect girder.
Board (ME) vide ret.(i) above, decided that RDSO in association with W.Rly should
“inalise the configuration and standard drawings for composite girders of ROBS,
The suggestions were collected from other railways atso and standard composite
2 girders for various spans have been finalised which will cater most of the situation: —-
for planning of ROB. Standard depin and spacing of composite ste! girders for various
spans are glven in table below:
[Square Spacing | Total no. of
of girders | tracks Incfuding

‘These spans are suitable for square spans"end can also cater for skew angie
crossing up lo 20 deg , when above length are taken as skew span. These spans may
de suilable for higher skew crossings also with specific consideration in design of deck.

2 9 Road width, foot paths, crash barriers, etc... The number of girders requited for
can be decided keeping max. centre to centre distance in square’ as 2.5 m and
maximum overhang of slab 8 1.0m. Some salient features are given 2s under: ba
i, These gliders are welded type.
iL End diaphragm ateders should be provid 9 tie alignment of the bearing so
thet the entire span at one end can be lifted with help of synchronous Jacks for
attending bearings ctc,. Cross bracing should be provided squire to the girder
alignment.
ji, All field joints of cross bracings agd end oiaphragms are planned with High
Strength Friction Grip’ Gots.Stud type/ flexible shear connectors are provided. Rigid shear connectors of
structural steel section welded on top flange should riot be provided,
‘The in situ concrete slabs of M-35 shall be provided.
The top of pile cap should be planned not above formation level and bottom of
pile cap should not be planned below the slope line-of 1:1 from the edge of the
sleepers, 7 i
Provislon of AbutmenUpier at raitway boundary Is not mandatory. Standard span
should be planned over the railway track. Adjacent spans can.aiso be of required
standard span. *
GAO for skew crossing may be planned with.skew. angle in Inctemant of 5 deg.
Normally the skew angle more than 45 degree should be avoided. However any
‘skew angle can b2 provided with approval of CBE If unavoidable.
The GAD should be prepared carefull to fit in above standard span girders. In
ease of. higher skew crossings, next higher standard span can be used. For an
exampie 4 24.5 si she 8} ‘crossing thme tracks up t0'45 deg.
skew angle,
‘The pier can be circular or of wall type parallel to the track. At abutment also
piers fype structure can be provided with wall of Reinforced Earth work .in the
‘cal plans and elevation for various span ate enclosed for guidance , which have
made 10 cover most of the cases. Stil comment and suggestions for improvement
requested so that same can be Incorporated. while issuing tne drawings. The
gestions if any may be sent positively by 19.05.2010.
Tonal Raitways may plan their ROB works as per above guidelines and
tion of same may be advised to this office as well. os EDCE/BES-Il, Railway
'ré for perusal of Board. These guidetinss have been pasted on IRICEN'S
asite as well a8-0n ROSO website along with all the Annexures. The hard copy
also be sent to all the Zonal Rallways.
