FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
ASSIGNMENT

Collect information about CFO’s of some organizations. Discuss role of any one
of them in the success of his/her organization.

1. TATA STEEL

Mr Koushik Chatterjee is the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of


Tata Steel Limited. He joined Tata Steel in 1995 was appointed Vice President
(Finance) in 2004.
Background: ICAI fellow; joined Tata Steel in 1995; VP, finance, Tata Steel (2004-
2007); Group CFO since 2008.
Winning move in 2008-09: Raising capital ahead of requirement and then managing
the crisis through management of liquidity.

Challenge Ahead: Managing a multi- speed organization where different units are
moving with different priorities.

2. INFOSYS

Mr V. Balakrishnan is the Chief Financial Officer of INFOSYS, a leading IT company.

Background: B.Sc. degree from the university of Madras. He also holds ACA, ACS and
AICWA degrees. Has spent 19 years in Infosys; was at AMCO batteries earlier.

Winning move: Repaying investor confidence with four one-time dividends.


Challenge ahead: To put Infosys back on the fast growth path.

3. TCS

Mr S Mahalingam is the Chief Financial Officer of TCS, an information technology


consulting company.

Background: Chartered accountant, has worked with TCS since 1970.

Winning move in 2008-09: Steered TCS during tough times, helped the company make its
largest ever acquisition.

4. AXIS BANK

Mr. Jairam Sridharan is Group Executive and Chief Financial Officer at Axis Bank and
handles Finance, Strategy & Business Intelligence functions.

Background: Mr. Sridharan is a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from IIT


Delhi and Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Calcutta.

Winning move: In his previous role in the Bank, he was President – Retail Lending &
Payments & was responsible for driving growth in the retail lending and payments businesses
comprising retail lending products, cards business and the agriculture & rural lending
business.

5. HERO HONDA

Mr Ravi Sud, a Vice President and CFO of Hero Honda, best in liquidity management
( Large Company)

Background: PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad, AICWA, FCS. He has spent 12 years with Hero
Honda. He previously worked with Eicher motors.

Winning move: In 2008 which helped dealers sell better than usual numbers in the festive
season.
Role of Mr. Mr Koushik Chatterjee

 He is responsible for a company's past and present financial situation, and he is an


integral part of a company's financial future.
 He performed multiple duties, from financial reportage to deciding where and when to
invest company funds. 
 He oversees the capital structure of the company, determining the best mix
of debt, equity, and internal financing.

Discuss present scenario of Indian financial system.

Growth of the Capital Market in India

 The ratio of the transaction was increased with the share ratio and deposit system

 The removal of the pliable but ill-used forward trading mechanism

 The introduction of infotech systems in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in order
to cater to the various investors in different locations

Growth in the Insurance sector in India

 With the opening of the market, foreign and private Indian players are keen to convert
untapped market potential into opportunities by providing tailor-made products.

 The insurance market is filled up with new players which has led to the introduction
of several innovative insurance based products, value add-ons, and services. Many
foreign companies have also entered the arena such as Tokyo Marine, Aviva, Allianz,
Lombard General, AMP, New York Life, Standard Life, AIG, and Sun Life.

Growth of the Venture Capital market in India

 The venture capital sector in India is one of the most active in the financial sector in
spite of the hindrances by the external set up.
 Presently in India there are around 34 national and 2 international SEBI registered
venture capital funds.
