HEATPAC EHM SERVICE MANUAL 1 FUNCTION DESCRIPTION
1 Function Description
1.1 Application
The heater is used in Heatpac® and Viscochief®
heating systems, together with control unit and
power unit, for stepless heating of mineral oils.
X0 2 45 88 B
1.2 Design
The heater consists of a number of aluminium
heating elements mounted on a flange to form a
cartridge. This is inserted into a steel pressure
vessel. A baffle inside the pressure vessel diverts
the flow into two passages. The elements are
electrically connected to a junction box on top of
the heater in groups of three to achieve
symmetrical load. The different groups are then
connected in parallel to form up to four part
loads when connected to the power unit.

Recommendations
The heater should be inspected, and if necessary
cleaned, as follows:
• New heater – after max. three months
• Fuel/diesel oil heater – every year
• Lube oil heater – every 3 months if the
elements are heavily soiled on latest
inspection; every 6 months if they are only
slightly soiled

When reassembling:
1 Mount the elements in the element flange with
new coppar washers for sealing, and with the
nuts on the top side.
2 Lubricate the threads with oil.
3 Place the phased elements in the corners and
against the partition plate (see Spare Parts
Catalogue).
4 The gasket may be glued to the housing
flange with gasket glue.
5 Mount the element packet in the housing so
that the earth fastening holes on the flanges
are in the same direction.
6 Cross tighten the bolts holding the flanges to a
torque of 200 Nm.

NOTE
4.1 Mounting
The electric heater can be mounted in a vertical
position, or horizontal position resting on
mounting brackets. A minimum of 620 mm free
space must be allowed for removal of heating
elements.
The direction of flow is marked on the heater.

4.3 Protection and Storage
If not delivered in a water-resistant box for
outdoor storage, the heater must be stored
indoors at 5 – 55 °C.
If there is risk for water condensation,
ventilation and heating above dew point must be
provided.
Storage temperature for elements must be min.
18 °C. Storage for a longer period of time (one
year or more) may result in a significant
reduction of insulation resistance. See ‘‘Action to
Increase Insulation Resistance” on page 7.
If the heater has been in use:
• Fill the heater with a non-corrosive lubricating
oil.
• Place a number of bags of silica gel inside the
connection box to absorb humidity.
If the storage time exceeds 12 months, the
equipment must be inspected every 6 months
and the protection renewed where necessary.
