AC Fundamentals

1) An alternating current is represented by i = 100 sin(ωt). How long it will take for the
current to attain values of 20,30,50,80 and 100A if the supply frequency is 50Hz.
(0.00064;0.001;0.00165;0.00295;0.005s)
2) Determine the phase difference between respective emf and current from the phasor
diagram. Also find the frequency of each wave.
a) e = 330 sin(157t- π/3); i = 20 sin(157t)
b) e = 400 sin(4ωt- π/2); i = 25 sin(4ωt+ π/2)

3) Four sub-circuits A, B, C and D are connected in series across 230V, single phase, 50Hz ac
supply. The voltages across three of these sub-circuits relative to the currents through
them are as follows:
V1=100 V at 30o leading, V1=80 V at 50o lagging, V3=120 V at 60o leading
If the supply voltage lags the current by 30o, find the voltage across fourth sub-circuit
and its relative phase by both analytical as well as graphical method.(210 V, 89 degree
lagging)

4) Calculate the rms value of an ac voltage wave which can be represented by alternate
positive and negative semicircles of radius R.(0.816R)

5) Determine the rms and average values of output voltage of a half wave rectifier.
(0.5Im,Im/π)

6) Determine the rms and average values of a resultant current consisting of alternating
current of peak value 10A and direct current of 10.(10A,12.25A)

7) Calculate the average and rms value, form factor and peak factor of a periodic current
wave having the following values for equal time intervals, changing suddenly from one
value to the next: 0,40,60,80,100,80,60,40,0,-40,-60,-80,-100,-80,-60,-40,0
(57.5A,64.42A,1.12,1.552)

8) A capacitor connected to a 230V, 50Hz supply draws 15A. What current will it draw
when the capacitance and frequency both are reduced to half? (3.75A)

9) Define the following terms: average value, rms value, form factor, peak factor, phase,
phase difference, frequency, period
10) Explain the generation of sinusoidal voltage with suitable sketch.
