Electrostatics

1) Three charges of 40 nC, - 40 nC and 80 nC are placed at three corners A, B, C of a square of 5 cm side.
The medium is air. Find the electric field at the corner D of the square.(25.418*104N/C@21.430)

2) Three charges of 0.2 nC, - 0.8 nC and 0.4 nC are placed at three corners B,C,D of a rectangle ABCD
whose sides are AB=5cm, BC=7cm. The medium is air. Find the potential at the corner A of the
rectangle.(3.6V)

3) A 100 µF capacitor is charged from a 200 V supply. After it is fully charged, it is disconnected and
immediately connected across a 50 µF capacitor which is initially uncharged. Calculate
a) p.d. across the combination (133.34V)
b) energy stored before and after the parallel connection.

4) A capacitor of 30 µF is connected in series with a resistor of 500 Ω across a 100 V DC supply.


Find a) time constant (0.015s)
b) equation of voltage as function of time
c) charging current after 0.05 sec (9.95mA)
d) voltage across resistor after 0.05 sec (4.975V)

5) Three capacitors 2µF, 3µF and 6µF are connected in series across a 500V dc supply. Determine
a) the charge on each capacitor (500µC)
b) p.d. across each capacitor (250,166.7,83.3V)
c) energy stored in 6µF capacitor (0.0208J)

6) The capacitance of the capacitor formed by two parallel metal sheets, each 100 cm 2 in area, separated
by a dielectric 2 mm thick is 2*10-10 F. A p.d. of 20kV is applied across the capacitor. Determine,
a) total dielectric flux (4µC)
b) potential gradient (100kV/cm)
c) relative permittivity of the material (4.5)
d) electric flux density (400µC/m2)

7) State and explain Coulomb’s law.

8) Derive the expression for the capacitance of parallel plate capacitor with uniform and composite
dielectric.

9) Derive the expression for energy stored in capacitor when it is charged to the rated voltage.

10) Explain the phenomenon of growth and decay of voltage in capacitive circuit and derive the
expressions for voltage across capacitor during charging and discharging.
