Need:
Paper
Pencil
Different colored pens/pencils
Highlighter
Basic division When dividing a polynomial expression by a single _____________.
Dividing by a _______________

EXAMPLES:
9𝑥 2 +12𝑥−18 5𝑎2 𝑏−15𝑎𝑏3 +10𝑎3 𝑏4
3𝑥 5𝑎𝑏
Long division Dividing by a _______________ or more. 3x 2  7 x  12
 3x  2 
6
x3 x3

EXAMPLES:
3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 12 ÷ 𝑥 + 3 5𝑥 2 + 2 ÷ 𝑥 + 1
Synthetic division THIS IS AN ALTERNATIVE FORM TO LONG DIVISION BUT…
Can only divide by a _______________________.
Leading coefficient has to be ______.
STEPS:
1. Put degrees of the terms are in descending order. Write the coefficients.
- (Make sure to put in 0 for a missing term.)
2. Write constant ‘r’ of divisor in box for x – r.
3. Bring down first coefficient.
4. Multiply 1st coefficient by r. Put answer under 2nd coefficient.
5. Add those 2 together.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until done.

EXAMPLE:
3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 12 ÷ 𝑥 + 3
Synthetic division

Example: (2𝑥 3 – 13𝑥 2 + 26𝑥 – 24) ÷ (𝑥 – 4) Example: (𝑥 3 – 2𝑥 2 − 25𝑥 – 6) ÷ (𝑥 – 6)

Synthetic division

Example: (𝑥 4 – 10𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 4) ÷ (𝑥 + 3) Example: (𝑥 3 − 25𝑥 + 1) ÷ (𝑥 + 5)

Go to IXL.com.  Algebra 2  Do the following objectives:

K.1, K.2, K.3, K.4, K.5

K.4 = long division
K.5 = synthetic division
