Dear Sir/Madam,
Research has shown that vision/eye sight is the largest portal of entry to the brain accounting
for about 80% of the information that is carried into the brain through learning. That being
said, a seemingly insignificant eye problem in a child ,if undetected and not given early
treatment can seriously affect the child's academic performance, performance in sports and
the child's overall psycho-social health. What makes the issue critical is the fact that over
95% of vision-related problems cannot be detected by the eye doctor at birth and usually
start to manifest as the child develops hence warranting the need for annual eye screening for
children from 6-months old to teenage years. More so, most sight conditions in children are
not easily observable by their parents, their teachers or the children themselves hence these
vulnerable children are sometimes predisposed to eye conditions like squint (cross-eye),
amblyopia (lazy eye) etc which may lead to irreversible/permanent visual impairment.
In view of the above that my colleague doctors and myself have taken the initiative to embark
on an eye screening and disease management/treatment for the pupils in your school after the
necessary protocol, including parental consent, has been followed. We propose to carry out
the exercise in the month of September this year. We look forward to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully.
