MICRO TEACHING REFLECTIVE REPORT

For Task 2, my group has presented on Superheroes (Unit 3) for Year 5 pupils. The
focused skill was listening and speaking. As there were three of us, we have divided our parts
fairly and I was responsible for set induction and presentation stage. In this reflective report,
choices of topic, materials and activities in the lesson plan will be justified. Furthermore, there
were several strengths and weaknesses identified throughout my microteaching experience
based on the feedback given by peers.

Firstly, the topic of Superhero was mainly chosen based on the Standard Curriculum
(KSSR) for Year 5. In addition, we personally thought that as ‘Superheroes’ were close to the
pupils’ heart and it would make the lesson more captivating to the pupils. Moreover, as the
focused skill were listening and speaking, the learning objectives were connected to the
learning standard for the skills. Related to this, one of the comments given by the peer was
my inability to check whether learning objectives were achieved or not. I reflected this as one
my weaknesses shown in my presentation. Referring to the lesson plan, the learning objective
for presentation stage was to name three superheroes that they know and the superpowers
that the superheroes possess. However, in my presentation, I was only able to call out two out
of three pupils to give their responds to my question. This was due to lack of attention given
to the learning objectives from my side. For this reason, I have learnt that learning objectives
are crucial in the process of learning. This is because according to University of Colorado
(2007) in Learning Objectives, they are important as they provide students with a clear
purpose to focus their learning efforts. As a future teacher, I would focus more on achieving
learning objectives to make sure that my future pupils would be on the right track during the
lesson.

Secondly, the materials chosen for the presentation stage were slides which consists of
the superpowers. Our group has chosen to incorporate the use of technology in our lesson as
it would create more advanced learning environment for the pupils. Saviddis (2020) has
mentioned that using technology would encourage active participation in the classroom which
would result to increased knowledge retention. I also personally believed that incorporating
technology would have greater impact on the pupils rather than using textbooks only. In this
context, as I do not possess a LCD projector at home, I alternatively used the laptop to present
my input to the pupils. In addition, I questioned my pupils constantly to make sure that they
were able to follow the lesson even it was not stated in the lesson plan. As a result, the learners
were actively involved and motivated throughout the lesson. This is important in the sense of
flexibility to respond to the changing circumstances and adapting the planned activities as
future teachers.

Lastly, the purpose of the activities selected for set induction and presentation was to
integrate fun learning into the lesson. In the set induction stage, I was dressed like a superhero
to arouse the pupils’ attention while in the presentation stage, technology was incorporated
into the lesson instead of using plain textbook. The pupils also got the chance to be
“Superkids” in the lesson. On top of that, according to the peer’s feedback, I have shown a
good sense of humour throughout my lesson. This has brightened the overall environment of
my class. Fun learning also increased students’ willingness to participate and take risks
especially when teachers used activities that make learning engaging and fun (American
English). From my observation, fun learning would benefit me as a future teacher as if the
teaching and learning process is fun, the pupils would keep the pupils coming for more and
stay curious.

It can be concluded that I have recognized some of my weaknesses and strengths

throughout my microteaching experience with the help of feedback from my peers. In my future
teaching session, I would bear in mind to not repeat the same mistakes and improve my
strengths to benefit my pupils. The process of learning to teach really require repetition and
dedication.
