Material : Caption Letter

A. Definition

A caption is a short explanation or description of a picture

located near the picture. It can be on either side of the picture,
above the picture, or below the picture. The information
included in a caption is very detailed and specific, but short
and to the point. A caption doesn’t always tell the whole story.
A caption often accompanies a story.

B. Where Caption Might Found ?

1. Newspaper

4. Internet
5. Most print materials that has pictures

C. Languange Features

1. Prepositional Phrases
-> is a series of words made up of a preposition and its
object.
-> We will order coffe during halftime
2. Infinitive phrases
-> Is a phrase that contains infinitive, object, and modifier
3. Participial phrases
-> is dressep up like a verb, but they function as adjective to
describe nouns
4. Adjective Clause
-> is contains about relative pronoun
( who,whose,whom,which/that )
D. Purpose

Captions describe what the reader sees in front of him/her.

People look at headlines and pictures to decide what they want to
read in the newspaper. Captions are another way to tell the news.
If a picture grasps their attention, they will read the caption. If
the caption is interesting to them, they will read the article.
Captions add color and make the newspaper more interesting.
Captions can also show emotion.

E. Tips For Writing Caption

1. Caption must explain the picture using words, sentences or

phrases.
2. To make a good caption, we have to pay attention to the quality
of the image, so the caption is more interesting.
3. Make sure the caption provides correct, accurate and useful
information.
4. Good captions usually explain something that is not visible in
the photo.
5. Caption usually does not start with an article (a, an, or the).
6. When in the picture there are several people, then in caption
writing, we can give the word 'left, from left, right, or from
right'.
