The amniotic fluid is the protective liquid contained by the amniotic sac of a gravid amniote.

This fluid serves as a cushion for the growing fetus, but also serves to facilitate the exchange of
nutrients, water, and biochemical products between mother and fetus.

The Purpose
 Cushions and protects the baby.1
 Allows room for the baby to move and develop.
 Fills the lungs during fetal "breathing," which aids proper lung development before birth. 2
 Provides a relatively consistent temperature for the baby.
 Makes up the fetus’ urine.

There are four categories of amniotic fluid:

Oligohydramnios: Less than 200 milliliters (mL) of amniotic fluid at term

Pockets seen greater than 1 cm in diameter (normal)

Adequate fluid, seen everywhere between the fetus and uterine wall (normal)

Polyhydramnios: 2000 mL of fluid or greater

Other concerns with oligohydramnios:

 Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)

 Prolonged rupture of membranes
 Fetal malformations (renal agenesis, polycystic kidneys, urethral obstruction, etc.)
 Postmaturity syndrome

Risk factors for amniotic fluid leakageLeaking amniotic fluid
during the first and/or second trimesters can cause complications, including:

 birth defects
 miscarriage
 premature birth
 stillbirth

During the third trimester, low levels of amniotic fluid can cause:

 difficulties during labor, such as squeezing the umbilical cord, which can
affect a baby’s ability to get oxygen
 increased risk for cesarean delivery
 slowed growthl
