1. The Shirley Temple drink is made with a ratio of eight parts of ginger ale to one part
grenadine Syrup. How much of each is needed to make a 12 ounce Shirley Temple?

 Solution:

12 ÷ 9 = 1.3333 (one part)

10.6667 * 8 = 10.6667 (eight parts)

Jigger = 1.5 oz.

Basically, pour a not so full jigger of grenadine into a glass and add ginger ale until you get to
the 12 oz mark. Mix and serve.

Or.

16+2=18

18–6=12

Pour 16 oz of ginger ale into a glass, pour 2 ounces of grenadine in and mix. Pour a third of it off
into a separate glass, serve the remaining two thirds

2. The measures of the angles of a triangle are in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 3. Find the measure of
each angle.

 Solution:

The sum of angles in triangle=180.

The ratio is1:2:3

1x:2x:3x=180

x+2x+3x=180

6x=180

x=180/6

x=30

2x=2(30)=60

3x=3(30)=90

Then the angles are 30,60,90

3. A U.S. one dollar coin is made of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel in the following
ratio: 44: 3 : 2 : 1. Its mass is 8 grams. How many grams of each element are in a one dollar
coin?

 Solution

The ‘recipe’ and process for manufacturing a US one dollar coin entails weighing the component
metals, then melting them together. The four-part ratio would be of the relative portion of the
weight of each metal, not the quantity of atoms. Weight and mass are comparable units at sea
level on the Earth.

The total number of “parts” is the sum of the four terms of the ratio,

44+3+2+1=50.44+3+2+1=50.
This means that copper would be 44 parts of the 50 parts that make up the whole of the metal
batch, the fraction 4450.
The zinc would be 350
Manganese, 250
Nickel, 150
Now, the weights of the metals shaped into a coin will be in the same proportion

Part whole=weight of metal weight of one coin part whole=weight of metal weight of one coin
We would solve this for the weight of an elemental metal in one coin by multiplying the fraction
on the left side by the weight of one coin, given as 8 grams.

Multiply the fractions shown above by 8 grams to get the weight contributed by each metal to the
total weight of the coin. That is left for the reader.

4. An 18 – Karat gold necklace weighs 24 grams: 18 grams of pure gold and six grams of
metal alloy. The cost of the necklace is $1200. There is a matching bracelet, weighing 10
grams.

a. What should be the cost of the bracelet?

b. How many grams of each, pure gold and metal alloy, should the bracelet contain?

 Solution

A.  Cost would be $500.00  

(24 divided by $1200.00 = $50.00 per gram)

 Hence, 10 grams x $50.00 = 500

 
B.   7.5 grams gold and 2.5 metal alloy.

 (18 grams is 3/4 of 24)

 So, the bracelet is 10grams x .75 or 7.5 leaving the remainder of .25 or 2.5 grams.

5. A Toyota Prius drove 208 miles on 5 gallons of gas. How far should it be able to go on a
full,11 gallon, tank?

 Solution

Proportion formula.
 
__208 miles_ =   ___x___
    5 gal                 11 gal Cross multiply. 

It will then be 5x (5 X x) = 2288 (208 X 11)

 
Hence, divide both sides by 5 to get x.  The answer is 457.6 miles

6. A six-pack of Coke costs $2.09. At this rate, how much should 32 cans cost?

 Solution

32/6*2.09=11.14 and 2/3rds.

Since you can’t have a third of a penny we’ll have to round up to $11.15.

But it “Should” cost $11.14 and 2/3rds. Presumably if you by 96 cans, you will only have to pay
$33.44 instead of the highly inflated $33.45 you would get if you bought them 32 at a time.

7. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the NBA record for the most points scored in a career,
38,387. In the first 280 games of his career, LeBron James has scored 7446 points. At this
rate, how many more games will LeBron James need to play to break Abdul-Jabbar’s
career record?

7446 points in 280 matches,

So, in one match he scored 26.5 points in average,

So, achieving 38387 points he need to play a total match of 1449, and he already played 280
matchs,

So, he needs to play 1169 match more to achieve that points.

8. The Lakers have won 27 games and lost 17 games. At this rate, how many games should
they win, in an 82 game season?

 Solution

9. Tax on a $25 item is $2.06. What should be the tax on a $45 item?

 Solution

By using proportionality,
$2.06 is to $25 as T is to $45
or
2.06/25=T/45
T=45(2.06)/25=2.06(9/5)=2.06(1.8)=3.71

Solution: $3.71

10. The results of a recent survey of 1500 American adults show that 525 approve of the job
that President George W. Bush is doing and 975 do not approve.

a. What is the ratio of those that approve to those that do not?

b. If there are 199 million adults in the United States, how many approve of George W?

c. If a larger survey was done, showing 5000 people approving of George W, how many
were surveyed?

a. 975/1500=13/20 de not approve

b.199000000*7/20=69 650 000 approved

c.5000/(7/20)=5000*20/7=14 285.7143=14286 surveyed
