TAKEMITSU, Toru
Composer. Nationality: Japanese. Born: Tokyo, 8 October 1930; grew up in Manchuria. Education: Studied
with Kasuji Kiyose. Career: Member of the avant-garde group Jikken Kobo; entered lms as assistant to
Fumio Hayasaka; — rst lm score, for Ginrin; has composed orchestra works; —taught at Yale
University (/social-sciences-and-law/education/colleges-us/yale-university), New Haven (/places/united-
states-and-canada/us-political-geography/new-haven), Connecticut. Awards: Japanese Academy Award
and Los Angeles (/places/united-states-and-canada/us-political-geography/los-angeles) Film Critics Award,
for Ran, 1985. Died: 16 February 1996.
