Phrases for Writing Opinions 

 
Use these when you are going to ​add on
In addition… OR furthermore.. to your point/opinion

Example: I don’t agree with a 15 minute recess, it is not long enough for active 
bodies. ​Furthermore/In addition​ I think recess should be longer so that we can 
all make sure to have water afterwards. 

Use this when you are explaining

In order to… OR so that... something that is a​ result​ of the first part.

Example: I put lots of extra butter on my popcorn ​in order to​ avoid having to 
put more on again in the middle of the movie. 
I put extra butter on my popcrom ​so that​ ​I don’t have to do it again in the 
middle of the movie. 

Use this the way you would use, ​for

For instance... example.

Example: It is important that we keep our classroom organized to keep 

everyone safe. ​For instance​,​ someone can bump into a chair in the middle of 
the floor and trip on it.

Opinions About the Green Book 

Victory Green (pictured below) is the creator of the Green Book, the book that 
Ruth uses in the story. Next to his photo is something that he wrote about the 
Green Book. He hopes there is a day when the Green Book won’t be published. 
What does he mean by this? Write your opinion. 
USE THREE PHRASES​ in your opinion writing.

United States. It will be a great day for us to
suspend this publication for then we can go
