Introduction

According to Whitworth (2014), “Research projects that have investigated how to teach online,

administer blended learning courses, or design technologies to exploit the ongoing revolutions in

communication have become legion.” Three examples of systems that have been developed

through this revolution are Learning Management Systems (LMS), Learning Content

Management Systems (LCMS) and Content Management Systems (CMS). As a senior designer,

I was assigned the task to research and recommend three nearby settings where these systems

would best fit. The three settings that were recommended are Heart Trust NTA, Mandeville High

School and Tiny-tots A-Z book store. LCMS was recommended for Heart Trust NTA institution,

LMS for Mandeville High School and CMS for Tiny-tots A-Z book store. These settings were

strategically matched with each system because of the nature of the services they offer.

Recommendation of HEART Trust NTA for LCMS

HEART Trust NTA has been facilitating the academic certification of individuals for over ten

years. This certification is recognized internationally, thus providing individuals with the

opportunity to work in foreign countries. Many of the courses offered by HEART Trust NTA are

designed to be completed over a short time span. Therefore students are forced to work extra

hard in order to successfully complete a course, which can be strenuous on their mental health

especially if they also have a full-time job. There is often a lot of content that the administration

expects the students to garner during the tenure of the course. This often results in the classes

extended to four hours of covering content. In an attempt to amend these constraints, the

implementation of a Learning content management system (LCMS) is recommended. It was

expressed by a past student of the HEART Trust NTA, that she recalled receiving a lot of printed

course content materials. The implementation of LCMS will allow instructors to deliver the

required course content within an online space which may be accessed by students at any time.

The expense for printing would be significantly reduced and students will become affiliated with

the course content through a LCMS platform at any time. LCMS fosters asynchronous learning

whereas students will the opportunity to process the content at their own pace and convenience.

There is a HEART Trust NTA training center located at almost all parishes across Jamaica which

offers different subjects. According to Jurubecu (2008), “LCMS systems provide a database

called a learning content object repository that will save work done by authors of courses as

learning objects, which can be accessed by the same or other authors to develop new learning,

workflow information for convenient updating of content.…”. Therefore in a society where

information is revolving the implementation of LCMS would be a suitable platform for HEART

Trust NTA to not only store information but to also update content when it is necessary. Through

the LCMS the updated of content will instantly be available to instructors of HEART Trust NTA

island wide. This will reduce the risk of outdated content be delivered to students at one location

while at another location the instructors have been presenting upgraded content.

Recommendation of Mandeville High School for LMS

Mandeville High School is a fairly new school located in the parish of Manchester. The first

cohort of the school will be sitting CSEC examination this year. Over the past five years the

school has been performing well at different academic and sports competitions, hence excellent

results are also anticipated from these examinations. The academic and administrative staff have

been working hard at preparing students for the CSEC examination. It was revealed based on

formal and informal assessment that some students however won’t be able to sit all eight subjects

they were initially offered. A Study Hall programme was developed to accommodate these

students, and to provide them with the opportunity to improve at Mathematics and English.

Based on observation and reports from the Mathematics and English teacher that was hired for

this purpose, it is evident that these students are not interested in what Study Hall sessions has to

offer.

In an effort to alleviate this problem, the implementation of a Learners Management System is

recommended. LMS facilitates independent study where students are encouraged to take

responsibilities of their own learning through interaction with technological devices such as

laptops and tablets. In such a setting, the instructor is advised to implement the ARCS

instructional model through a LMS platform. “The ARCS Model of motivation was developed in

response to a desire to find more effective ways of understanding the major influences on the

motivation to learn, and for systematic ways of identifying and solving problems with learning

motivation” (Keller 1987). According to ARCS instructional model, the first step to motivate

students is to grasp their attention. This step can be achieved because of the appearance of most

LMS platform resembles Facebook, a social network frequently used by teenagers. Examples of

Facebook-like platforms for education such as Edmodo, Schoology, and Edsby, as well as

Moodle and Haiku, (Rivero, 2015). The instructor may also upload enticing introductory videos

or images on the home page of the selected LMS.

The second step to motivate students is to make the learning experience relevant to the learner.

The assigned Mathematics and English teacher for the study hall would have the opportunity to

upload all the necessary content and instructions onto the LMS platform to be accessed by

students. One of the main advantages of LMS is that students are able to access course content at

anytime and anywhere. Students would, therefore be able to work at their own pace to cover

content and complete course work by the speculated deadline. This tailored approach makes

learning relevant to the students’ individualized academic needs. Students would therefore be

motivated to reach the finishing line since they are removed from “one size fits all” traditional

learning environment. The integration of Learning Managing System is also suitable for the

advancement of the school’s community due to its e-learning nature. According to Maid (2003)

“the single most important reason we integrate technology into our classes is that we have no

choice. Our students, our society, and our culture demand it. To not do so is to not give our

students the best education we can. (p. 40)”. Therefore the exposer to LMS would not only

benefit the students academically but it is also geared towards preparing students to adjust to the

technological climate of an evolving society.

Confidence is the third stage to motivate students according to the ARCS instructional model,

students must feel assured that they are able to be successful. This may be achieved through the

discussion forum feature that learning management systems offer. Students would receive the

opportunity to share their completed assigned tasks on the LMS platform to be reviewed by their

classmates and teachers (who are also expected to offer feedback). They will also receive the

option to ask their instructor questions, through a facilitator and students exchange forum.

Students would also have the privilege of viewing their report card at any time, which allows

them the opportunity to track their progress in the subject. Usually, parents would keep their

child’s report card in a safe place when they are distributed at the end of each term. Students

often have limited access to their report card, therefore, they often forget their grades, which may

prevent them from attempting to improve. The tracking system should boost students’

confidence to always thrive at doing better. The final step is satisfaction, LMS platforms also

provide the opportunity for students to be assessed through online discussions, quizzes and other

course work, therefore instructors will be able to test whether their objective is being met or not.

Students should be rewarded whenever they are successful at a quiz. Rewards may be verbal,

written praise or an electronic badge.

Recommendation of Tiny Tots & A-Z Bookshop for CMS

Tiny Tots & A-Z Bookshop is a store in which a variety of babies’ and children’s apparel, car

seats, cribs, toys, textbooks, and stationery are sold. This store attracts a lot of customers because

the cost of their products is usually reasonable. Although Tiny Tots & A-Z Bookshop is such a

popular store, they do not have a reliable website to inform the public about the nature of the

products. The implementation of a Content Management System is therefore recommended to

enhance and promote the store. According to Kim (2012) “Content Management systems (CMS)

take care of content creation, maintenance, versioning, and publishing on portals and search

engines.” Kim (2012) also expressed that CMS built-in compliance and security standards allow

content creation and contribution, content management and administration and Content

publishing and serving.

Content creation and contribution- Information about the products available at Tiny-tots and A-

Z store, may be stored and maintained through a CMS platform. The information would include

the price range of the products along with helpful descriptions. This characteristic of the CMS

would also make it possible for the managerial staff to upload a summary of each book in the

store. The contribution of aforesaid information would make the company more marketable as

costumers would have ready access to information about products before visiting the store.

Content management and administration- CMS makes it possible for management to make

adjustments to the content uploaded unto the store’s website. The implementation of CMS does

not require technical experts, in fact the system can be managed by any member of staff. This

would be beneficial for the stores in that, more time would be spent for the operation of the

business rather than with technical difficulties. Management also has the opportunity to update

information when necessary, this would, therefore, reduce the risk of costumers receiving

misleading information such an outdated price.

Content publishing and serving- The opportunity to develop a website for one’s business is

possible through a Content Management System. Website provides the opportunity for Tiny-tots

and A-Z store to publish information about their store so that the public would be able to view.

With the advancement of technology, I strongly believe that every organization should make it

apart of their duty to implement any one of these systems in creating a smoothly operating

business.
