The patient presented with laryngotracheobronchitis, also known as croup, as evidenced by a sharp-barking cough, audible stridor, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Croup is usually caused by a viral infection that leads to swelling inside the trachea, interfering with normal breathing and producing characteristic symptoms. The nurse's plan was to open the airway, humidify oxygen, suction secretions if needed, and monitor respiratory and heart rate. After 4 hours of nursing interventions including positioning, suctioning, hydration and encouraging expectoration, the patient's airway patency improved and breathing became easier.
