1. (Practice)
a. To convert inches (in) to feet (ft), the number of inches should be multiplied by
which of the following conversion factors?
i. 12 in/1 ft ii. 1 ft/12 in

Answer :
1ft equals 30.48 cm
1inch equals 2.54 cm
12 inch equals 2.54 x 12 = 30.48 cm (1 feet)
1 ft equals 12 inch
1 ft/12 inch
Therefore the answer is ii. 1 ft/12 inch

b. To convert meters (m) to kilometers (km), the number of meters should be

multiplied by which of the following conversion factors?
i. 1000 m/1 km ii. 1 km/1000 m

Answer :
1 Km equals 1000 m
1 m equals 1/1000 km
Convert m to km is 1 km/1000 m
Therefore the answer is ii. 1 km/1000 m

c. To convert minutes (min) to seconds (sec), the number of minutes should be

multiplied by which of the following conversion factors?
i. 60 sec/1 min ii. 1 min/60 sec

Answer:
1 minute equals 60 sec
1 sec equals 1/60 minute
Convert min to sec is 60 sec/1 min
Therefore the answer is i. 60 sec/1 min
d. To convert seconds (sec) to minutes (min), the number of seconds should be
multiplied by which of the following conversion factors?
i. 60 sec/1 min ii. 1 min/60 sec

Answer:
1 sec equals 1/60 minute
1 minute equals 60 sec
Convert sec to min is 1 min/ 60 sec
Therefore the answer is ii. 1 min/ 60 sec

2. (Practice)
a. To convert feet (ft) to meters (m), the number of feet should be multiplied
by which of the following conversion factors?
i. 1 m/3.28 ft ii. 3.28 ft/1 m

Answer:
1 ft equals 0,3048 m
1 m equals 3,28084 ft
Convert ft to m is 1 m/3.28 ft
Therefore the answer is i. 1 m/3.28 ft

b. To convert sq.in to sq.ft, the number of sq.in should be multiplied by which of

the following conversion factors?
i. 144 sq.in/1 sq.ft ii. 1 sq.ft/144 sq.in

Answer:
1 sq.in equals 0,00694444 or 1/144 sq.ft
1 sq.ft equals 144 sq.in
Convert sq.in to sq.ft is 1 sq.ft/144 sq.in
Therefore the answer is ii. 1 sq.ft/144 sq.in
c. To convert sq.yd to sq.ft, the number of sq.yd should be multiplied by which of
the following conversion factors?
i. 1 sq.yd/9 sq.ft ii. 9 sq.ft/1 sq.yd

Answer:
1 sq.yd equals 9 sq.ft
1 sq.ft equals 1/9 sq.yd
Convert sq.yd to sq.ft is 9 sq.ft/1 sq.yd
Therefore the answer is ii. 9 sq.ft/1 sq.yd

5. (Automotive)
a. An automobile engine’s performance can be determined by monitoring its
rotations per minute (rpm). Determine the conversion factors that can be used to
convert rpm to frequency in Hertz (Hz), given that 1 rotation = 1 cycle, 1 minute
= 60 seconds, and 1 Hz = 1 cycle/sec.

Answer :
1 rotation = 1 cycle
1 min = 60 second 1Hz = 1 cycle/sec
1 rotation per minute (rpm) equals 1/60 Hz or  0.0166666666666667 Hz
So according to what is known 1 Hz = 1cycle/sec
Therefore the answer is 1 rpm = 0,0167 Hz
b. Using the conversion factors you determined in Exercise 5a, convert 2000 rpm
into Hertz

Answer :
1 rpm equals 0.0167 hz
2000 rpm is 2000 x 0.0167 = 33.4 Hz
Therefore the answer is 2000 rpm = 33.4 Hz

8. (Thermodynamics)
The work, W, performed by a single piston in an engine can be determined by this
formula:
W Fd =
F is the force provided by the piston in Newtons.
d is the distance the piston moves in meters.
a. Determine the units of W by calculating the units resulting from the
right side of the formula. Check that your answer corresponds to the
units for work listed in Table 1.1.

Answer :

1 ft-lbf = 1.356 j
1.356 j
1 ft-lbf x = 1356j
1
b. Determine the work
ft- performed by a piston that provides a force of 1000
N over a distancelbfof 15 centimeters.
given :
f = 1000N
d = 15 cm to 0.15m
ask w….....?
answer :
W =f×d
= 1000 × 0.15 = 150𝑁/𝑚 (joule)
