Introduction
Today in our Introduction to Employment program, we are going to learn about
percentages.
How many people in the group know how to calculate percentages?
# The ones that know can help the ones that don’t know.
We are going to look at how to calculate percentages…and in particular how to calculate
By the end of the session you should be able to make percentage calculations
quickly and also convert percentages to fractions and decimals.

13 ÷ 100 = .13
See attachment
Then, follow the steps above for converting a decimal
to a percent.
.13 × 100 = 13

Conclusion (Review)
So maybe you can practice these again tonight and see if you remember what to do.
If any of you want a more difficult task try the extra work below.
Try and practice this next time you go shopping. See if you can do the calculations in
your head. Next week we will be working with…..

Notes
Some activities might take longer than expected because of students’ abilities…be flexible about what
to get through in this short period of time.

FSKNUM014 Calculate With Whole Numbers And Familiar Fractions Decimals
And Percentages For Work
Teacher activity 1
Teacher activity 2
If I say that 4/25ths of the group have nearly completed Workbook 1…what percentage
of the group is this?

Teacher activity 3
Another example.
Bananas cost 3.000rp but they have a 30% discount
3.000 X 30 – 300x 3 – 900
3.000-900= 2100rp
Another example:
This trout was 35.995
With 20% discount it equals 28.500
Let’s test the advertisement
20% x 35.995
= 2 x 3.6
= 7.2
35.995 – 7.2 = 28.700rp

Student Activity 3. Now you try these:
Teacher activity 4
Not 10% or 20% or 30%?
If the numbers don’t always end in zeros…you can move the decimal points instead of
cancelling zeros.
For example:
A tube of toothpaste costs 25.600rp has 15% discount
2.56 x 1.5 = 3.900
25.590- 3.900= 22.6900rp

And
These leather cowboy boots cost 1200000rp
Their discount today is 37%
How much are they today?

Homework/ Extra Work…A bit more difficult!
The more difficult task comes when you need to know a percentage when
you are given numbers that don’t fit so neatly into 100.
For example, you may know that what percentage of sugar is in bottle
of Coca Cola. A 600 ML BOTTLE OF COCA COLA HAS 64 GRAMS OF
SUGAR. What is the percentage of sugar in the bottle?
First you must divide the sugar serve by the bottle size.
64/600 = .106
See if you can calculate the rest of these drinks sugar content.
Gatorade:
