Personal Conflict Management

Ways to Manage Conflict


Confrontation (also called “care-frontation”)
1. Create a climate in which YOU judge the confrontation to be successful.

2. Clearly identify the particular behavior in the event.

3. Analyze the behavior involved.

4. Work to learn from the situation.

ƒ Collaborate or negotiate
ƒ Remain open to alternatives.
ƒ Look at the pros and cons of proposed tradeoffs.
ƒ Listen actively to others.
ƒ Recognize when we need more.
ƒ Work to appreciate the perceptions of others.

ƒ Withdraw
ƒ Choose to step back before acting.

ƒ Accommodate
ƒ Adjust your own thinking and behavior concerning the issue that is creating a
problem for you.
ƒ Perceive some value in what you have previously seen as a difficulty.
ƒ Allow yourself to change sufficiently so that the issue does not continue to
prove difficult for you.

Avoidance
1. Choose not to deal with the conflict at all.
