Informal, Collective urbanism

All the three cases talk about one aspect of urbanism i.e collective urbanism. They took the
idea of public participatory methods and strengthened community engagement.
Informalities were dealt with sensitivity hence, informal urbanism was also taken into
account. This can be explained well in the case of Kibera, Nairobi where Kounkuey Design
Initiative focussed on establishing self sufficient systems where income could be generated
within the neighbourhood itself. This would help the residents who are deficient in skills to
sustain themselves. As these communities belong to lower income strata and lack
education, therefore, they dwelled on NGOs for their benefits. The design initiative also
introduced community sanitation centre, kiosks and playgrounds in the area. Being aware
about the intangible and tangible conditions of the society, they even trained them in local
brick making and managing businesses. Women opened brick baking cooperatives and
generated income. Everybody collaborated and collectively were made to be a part of
system. Home-grown cities in Shivajinagar, Mumbai is a perfect example of public
participation where locals were involved in the construction process.
