1- Complete the table for H2O

P (kPa) T (oC) V (m3/kg) Phase description

300 133.52 0.4 Saturated Mixture
618.23 160 0.001102 Saturated liquid
5000 400 0.05784 Superheated Water
4000 450 0.08 Superheated Water
500 140 0.001080 Compressed liquid water

2- Complete the table for H2O

P (kPa) T (oC) h (kJ/kg) x Phase description

101.42 100 2675 1 Super-Heated Water
200 300 3072.1 Super-Heated Water

476.16 150 632.18 0 Saturated liquid
5000 120 507.19 0.00153 Compressed Liquid

h=h f + x∗h fg

h=h f + x∗( h g−hf )

507.19=503.81+ x∗2202→ x=0

3- A piston – cylinder device initialy contains 50 L of water at 200 oC and 200 kPa. Heat is removed
from the water at constant pressure unitl the entire gas is condensed to saturated liquid.
a) What is the mass of the water?

Answer:

V =50 L=0.05 m3 ; T 0=200 ° C ; P=200 KPa=0.2 MPa → Superheated water

 Superheated water – Table A-6:

m3
For the specified temperature and pressure, the specific volume is υ=1.080
kg

0.05 m3
V m= =0.04629 kg
We can use m= to determine the mass. m3

b) What is the final temperature?

Answer: At the final state, the cylinder contains saturated water. Using Table A-5 (saturated
water), it can be determined that at 200KPa, the saturation temperature is 120.21° C
c) Determine the total enthalpy change in (kJ).

Answer: Since, the mass, the initial, and the final enthalpy are known(or can be found in the
thermodynamics tables), the enthalpy change Δ H can be determined using the following formula:
Δ H =m∗( hfinal −h initial )

kJ kJ
where m=0.04629 kg ; hfinal =504.71 ; hinitial=2870.7
kg kg
Therefore, Δ H =0.04629∗ (504.71−2870.7 ) kJ =109.489 kJ

4- A piston –cylinder device initialy contains 1.87 kg of water at 400 kPa. Heat is added till the pistion
hit the stops at which the volume is doupled and equal to 2 L.

V=2 L

P=400 kPa

Determine:
a) The initial temperature

Answer: At this point, the initial volume, mass and pressure are known, therfore, we can firstly use
these properties to calculate the specific volume, and then to determine the initial temperature.
V
Firstly, we will use the mass formula to determine the specific volume m=

According to table A-6 – when looking at the pressire ad volume values, the saturated temperature
is 200 ℃

b) The final temperature

2m 3 2 m3
1.87 kg= →v= → v=1.07
v 1.87 kg
According to table A-6 – when looking at the pressire ad volume values, the saturated
temperature is between 600 ℃∧700 ℃ - 650 ℃

c) The enthalpy change in (kJ)

∆ H =m(h 1−h 2)
