ℎ = ℎ𝑓 + 𝑥 ∗ ℎ𝑓𝑔
ℎ = ℎ𝑓 + 𝑥 ∗ (ℎ𝑔 − ℎ𝑓 )
3- A piston – cylinder device initialy contains 50 L of water at 200 oC and 200 kPa. Heat is removed from
the water at constant pressure unitl the entire gas is condensed to saturated liquid.
a) What is the mass of the water?
Answer:
𝑽 = 𝟓𝟎𝑳 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟓 𝒎𝟑 ; 𝑻𝟎 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎 °𝑪; 𝑷 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝑲𝑷𝒂 = 𝟎. 𝟐𝑴𝑷𝒂 → 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓
𝑽 𝟎.𝟎𝟓𝒎𝟑
We can use 𝒎 = 𝝊 to determine the mass. 𝒎 = 𝒎𝟑

Answer: At the final state, the cylinder contains saturated water. Using Table A-5 (saturated
water), it can be determined that at 200KPa, the saturation temperature is 120.21 °𝐶
c) Determine the total enthalpy change in (kJ).
Answer: Since, the mass, the initial, and the final enthalpy are known(or can be found in the
thermodynamics tables), the enthalpy change 𝚫𝑯 can be determined using the following formula:
𝚫𝑯 = 𝒎 ∗ (𝒉𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 − 𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 )
𝑘𝐽 𝑘𝐽
𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑚 = 0.04629 𝑘𝑔; ℎ𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 = 504.71 ; ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 = 2870.7
𝑘𝑔 𝑘𝑔
Therefore, 𝚫𝑯 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟒𝟔𝟐𝟗 ∗ (𝟓𝟎𝟒. 𝟕𝟏 − 𝟐𝟖𝟕𝟎. 𝟕) 𝒌𝑱 = 𝟏𝟎𝟗. 𝟒𝟖𝟗 𝒌𝑱
4- A piston –cylinder device initialy contains 1.87 kg of water at 400 kPa. Heat is added till the pistion
hit the stops at which the volume is doupled and equal to 2 L.
V=2 L
P=400 kPa
𝑚 = 1.87 𝑘𝑔
𝑃 = 400𝐾𝑃𝑎 = 0.4𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝑉𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙
𝑉𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 = 2𝐿 = 0.002 𝑚3 → 𝑉𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 = = 1𝐿 = 0.001𝑚3

Determine:
a) The initial temperature
Answer: At this point, the initial volume, mass and pressure are known, therfore, we can firstly use
these properties to calculate the specific volume, and then to determine the initial temperature.
𝑽
Firstly, we will use the mass formula to determine the specific volume 𝒎= 𝝊

𝒗 𝟏. 𝟖𝟕 𝒌𝒈
According to table A-5 – when looking at the 400 KPa value, the saturated temperature is 143.61℃
