Weekly Legal Updates Mar Week 2

1. Two new benches of the National Company Law Tribunal approved:

The Government of India has approved the setting up of two new benches of the National Company Law
Tribunal (NCLT), one at the new capital of Andhra Pradesh Amaravati and the second at Indore, Madhya
Pradesh. The NCLT is a quasi judicial body setup under the Companies Act 2013. Presently there are 14
benches of the NCLT in the country including the Principal Bench at New Delhi.

2. Life ban on cricketer Sreesanth lifted by the Supreme Court:

The Supreme Court of India has lifted/removed the life ban on cricketer Sreesanth. The life ban was imposed
on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after he was found indulged in the spot fixing
during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013.

3. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice P C Ghose to be the 1st Lokpal of India:

Justice P C Ghose who retired as the judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2017 and is presently the
member of the National Human Rights Commission is likely to be the 1 st Lokpal of India. This appointment
shall be made in accordance with the Lokpal Act 2013. He shall be heading the institution of Lokpal with
about 8 members in it.

4. Senior Advocate P S Narasimha appointed as the mediator by Supreme Court for BCCI
administration disputes:

The apex court has appointed Senior Advocate P S Narasimha as mediator to resolve the disputes of BCCI
administration. This was done in one of the hearings in the case of BCCI v. Cricket Association of Bihar.
The Supreme Court has been actively interfering and monitoring the administration of BCCI. In 2017 a 4
member Committee of Administrators (under the Chairmanship of former CAG Vinod Rai) was formed.
Further in 2019 an Ombudsman has been appointed for the BCCI by the Supreme Court. These are mainly
the implementations of Justice Lodha committee.
